Veils of Glory: Understanding Divine Encounter
"And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face." - Exodus 34:33

In Exodus 34:33, we encounter a profound moment in biblical history: "And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face." This seemingly simple act encapsulates the complexity and depth of Moses’ relationship with God, revealing layers of meaning about divine encounter, the human response to holiness, and the way we live out our faith in a world that often feels distant from God.
To understand the context of this verse, we must first remember the extraordinary experience Moses had just undergone: he had spoken with God face to face on Mount Sinai, receiving the commandments that would guide the Israelites. This encounter left him with a radiant face—a physical manifestation of the glory of God. The brilliance that emanated from him was so intense that the people could not behold it. Thus, Moses placed a veil over his face to shield them from this overwhelming divine radiance.
While his intention to protect the people was noble, the veil also signifies a deeper truth — the contrast between God’s holiness and human frailty. God is described throughout Scripture as holy and majestic, and encounters with Him often elicit fear and reverence. The veil symbolizes the distance that our sin creates between us and God’s holiness. Just as Moses veils his glory, we, too, often carry things that obscure our own radiant encounters with God.
The veil can represent our misconceptions, fears, or barriers we erect between ourselves and the Lord. Many believers today experience a form of veiling in their spirituality. We may feel unworthy of God’s presence due to our past mistakes, or we may simply grow complacent in our relationship with Him. In moments when we should approach God openly, we instead hide behind our own ‘veils’ of shame, doubt, or distraction.
Reflecting on this, we are challenged to ask ourselves: what veils do I wear? Are there areas in my life where I let shame prevent me from entering into God’s presence? Is there a task I hesitated to undertake because I doubted my worthiness? The beauty of the Gospel is that through Christ, the ultimate Mediator, the veil has been torn. In Matthew 27:51, as Jesus breathed His last, the veil of the Temple was ripped from top to bottom, signifying that the separation between God and humanity had been obliterated. This act invites us into a relationship where we no longer need to veil ourselves from divine glory.
Yet, there is another aspect to consider. After Moses spoke with the Israelites, he put the veil back on his face. This reflects an important spiritual principle: while we are called to experience God’s glory, that glory must also be shared wisely in our communities. We are not to showcase our encounters with God in a way that elevates ourselves while diminishing others’ experiences of Him. Instead, we should humbly reflect that glory to illuminate the path for others, leading them towards their own encounters with God.
In our lives today, let us not shy away from embracing interactions with God that transform us. When we engage in prayer, worship, or Scripture reading, we are beholding the glory of God. Likewise, may we be intentional about how we carry that transformative experience into our relationships. Share your journey candidly, letting others see the realities of walking with God, including the struggles and triumphs, but always shining with the hope of His presence.
As we close, let us pray for courage to remove the veils that hinder our encounters with God. May we not only be transformed by His presence but become radiant reflections of His love and grace in our world. Through holy living and authentic relationships, we too can create spaces where others might come to know His glory in their own lives. Let us be bearers of that light, unafraid to speak boldly of His goodness, allowing the veil of God’s radiant presence to shine through us.
