Digging for Water in Dry Places
"And all the Egyptians digged round about the river for water to drink; for they could not drink of the water of the river." - Exodus 7:24

In the midst of turmoil and despair, the plight of the Egyptians during the plagues of Egypt brings to light a profound lesson about searching for sustenance not only in physical needs but in spiritual realities. The verse from Exodus 7:24 states, "And all the Egyptians digged round about the river for water to drink; for they could not drink of the water of the river." This moment in scripture seeks to reveal not only the challenges faced by the Egyptians but also the deeper spiritual thirst that we all may experience when faced with adversity.
As we dive into the context of the passage, we can see that these events unfolded as God initiated the first of many plagues due to Pharaoh's hardened heart. The river, representing life, sustenance, and provision, had been turned to blood, rendering it undrinkable and symbolic of a curse on the land of Egypt. The Egyptians, desperate for water, frantically dug around the river hoping to find that which had been taken from them. This imagery highlights the grave desperation felt when one’s immediate source of sustenance is compromised.
In our lives, we, too, may often find ourselves in positions where our usual sources of support and sustenance become tainted or unavailable. It has been said that the measure of a person’s faith can sometimes be observed during times of trial. When the pathways to joy, hope, and peace seem blocked, we may feel compelled to dig around us in search of something to quench our thirst. However, we must ask ourselves: what are we digging for, and where will it lead us?
The Egyptians dug and dug, but their digging did not reflect faith; instead, it showed a struggle against the inevitable consequences of their rebellion against God. They were seeking water, but they neglected to heed the warning signs which God had provided through Moses and Aaron. Similarly, in times of desperation, it is easy for us to forsake the source of living water provided by our Lord, seeking instead temporary solutions in places which ultimately cannot satisfy.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus refers to Himself as the living water. In John 4:14, He boldly claims, "But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life." Reflecting on this, we are reminded that if we dig deeper into our relationship with Christ, we will find a source that will never run dry—a wellspring of healing, hope, and sustenance.
The act of digging done by the Egyptians can serve as a metaphor for our own lives. We often find ourselves in dry, barren places, desperately attempting to unearth something that provides relief from our spiritual drought. Yet, the danger is that we may focus on the digging and forget to look to the source of the water that can truly restore us.
Let us also consider the implications of communal digging. The Egyptians were united in their effort to seek water, yet they were all digging in the wrong place. In our own lives, we too knit ourselves together with others when trials arise, often misdirected by societal pressures or misguided advice. This collective search does not inherently bring us closer to Christ. Instead, we are called to lift one another in seeking Christ and His truths above all else.
Therefore, might we encourage one another to hunger and thirst for righteousness, leading us to the well that never runs dry? As we reflect on this passage, let us be mindful of where we dig for water in our times of drought and remember the wellspring of life offered to us through faith in Jesus Christ. Let us not settle for anything less than the living water that fulfills every dry longing within our souls.
