Idols in Our Hearts: A Call to Introspection
"Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?" - Ezekiel 14:3

Ezekiel 14:3 proclaims, "Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?" This striking verse from the book of Ezekiel serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers that arise when our hearts become a resting place for idols, distracting us from our true relationship with God.
As we delve into this passage, it’s important to recognize the context in which the Lord spoke to Ezekiel. The Hebrew people were exiled in Babylon, grappling with their identities and faith in the shadow of paganism and the allure of the surrounding culture. Many had turned away from the one true God, seeking fulfillment in things that could never satisfy their souls. Idols became their refuge, manifestations of their misplaced hopes and affections. God, in His infinite wisdom, issues a challenge. How could He expect His people to inquire of Him when their hearts were divided, full of competing desires?
Idolatry transcends the act of worshipping physical images; it is the process of placing anything above God in our affections and priorities. Even today, as modern believers, we must reflect on what idols may have crept into our own hearts. These might not be golden calves or statues made of wood, but can take the form of relationships, careers, aspirations, or the desire for recognition. Often, the more legitimate our desires may appear, the more insidious they can become as they stealthily encourage us to prioritize them above our allegiance to God.
Ezekiel’s audience had set their idols in their hearts, indicating a deliberate, conscious decision to elevate these idols above their faith and communion with God. The phrase "stumblingblock of their iniquity" suggests the harm that such preoccupations invite into their lives—spiritual immaturity, a hardened heart, and ultimately separation from God. Because of such blatant idolatry, God questioned the very notion of whether they could truly seek Him. Their hearts were cluttered with unholy affections, hindering their ability to approach God with sincerity.
This passage compels us to do some soul-searching. Are there areas in our lives where we have allowed idols to take root? Perhaps like the people of Judah, we haven’t intentionally worshipped these idols; nonetheless, we find ourselves investing our emotional and spiritual energies into things that detract from our relationship with God. It could be as simple as time spent on social media—scrolling through feeds that leave us feeling empty, angrier, or more insecure. Or it could be the unrelenting pursuit of a promotion or financial security that clouds our ability to trust in God’s provision.
When we pause to examine our lives, we must ask ourselves: What truly captures our heart? What do we turn to for solace when we are stressed or anxious? Are we looking to God first or do we reach for our idols?
God desires our whole heart. In Exodus 20:3, He commands, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." This is not a restriction, but rather a foundational principle meant to protect our hearts from destruction. He longs for us to seek Him wholeheartedly—where there is no competition in affection and allegiance.
In the New Testament, we find a powerful promise in James 4:8, "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” This might feel challenging if our hearts feel cluttered or unsightly, but the beauty of grace is that God invites us to come as we are—ready to remove the idols that hinder our walk.
So let us earnestly seek to identify any idols lurking in our hearts, not so we may dwell in condemnation but so we can engage in the transformative work of repentance and renewal. Let us approach God, confessing our misplaced affections, inviting Him to cleanse us, and turning our hearts back to the one who is truly worthy of our worship. Only then can we genuinely inquire of Him, experience the fullness of His presence, and walk in the abundant life He has promised.
