As believers, we often find ourselves standing in the tension between the desires of our flesh and the call to live according to the Spirit. In Galatians 5:19-21, he lays bare the 'works of the flesh,' which manifest in a myriad of sinful behaviors and attitudes that ultimately lead to spiritual death and separation from God.

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,” (Galatians 5:19 KJV). These words resonate in our contemporary context as they did in Paul's day. Adultery and fornication represent not only physical acts but also a betrayal of covenant relationships, whether marital vows or our relationship with God. Jesus taught that even harboring lust in our hearts is akin to committing adultery (Matthew 5:28).

Uncleanness and lasciviousness speak to a heart that is driven by desires devoid of moral restraint, often leading to destructive behaviors and lifestyles. These behaviors not only affect us individually but have a ripple effect on society, leading to broken families and crushed spirits. In a world that celebrates freedom of expression and Self-fulfillment, we must remain vigilant against such temptations that, while promising pleasure, ultimately ensnare our souls.

Paul continues his list: “Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,” (Galatians 5:20 KJV). Idolatry, at its core, is anything that takes the place of God in our hearts. It could be a career, a relationship, or even our ambitions. Anything that we prioritize above God becomes an idol, leading us into spiritual ruin. Witchcraft, or the desire to manipulate the spiritual world for personal gain, shows a lack of trust in God’s sovereignty and a willingness to dabble in darkness.

Hatred and variance (disputes) embody the relational discord that plagues humanity. How often do we find ourselves embroiled in conflict, harboring grudges or engaging in strife with others? Such attitudes sow seeds of division, eroding the unity that Christ calls us to uphold. The world often glorifies such behaviors, but Paul warns that they cannot coexist with a life submitted to God.

The final acts of the flesh mentioned include: “Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like,” (Galatians 5:21 KJV). Envy can lead to a heart of bitterness, while drunkenness and revellings capture the essence of a life lived in excess and a lack of self-control. In a culture that often promotes indulgence and seeks momentary highs, these warnings weigh heavy on our hearts.

Paul’s severe conclusion is sobering: “of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” This isn't just a warning; it’s a call to reflection. In what ways have we entertained the works of the flesh in our lives? Have we justified our actions or attitudes?
