The Joy of the Resurrection: From Doubt to Empowerment
"They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence. He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God." - Luke 24:33-53

In the closing chapters of the Gospel of Luke, we find the disciples grappling with a whirlwind of emotions: despair, disbelief, amazement, and ultimately, joy. Luke 24:33-53 captures a profound moment of transformation that reveals deep truths about faith, the power of testimony, and the joy that comes from recognizing the Risen Christ.
The scene unfolds with two disciples who have just encountered the risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus. Upon realizing that they have walked and conversed with the Lord himself, they hurried back to Jerusalem, bursting with excitement, only to find the Eleven gathered and already proclaiming, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” (Luke 24:34). This moment of collective witness highlights the importance of community in our faith journeys, where sharing personal experiences of God can ignite and strengthen the faith of others.
The text recognizes the mixture of startle and fear among the disciples when Jesus suddenly appears among them, declaring, “Peace be with you.” (Luke 24:36). The emphasis on His peace serves as a reminder that no matter how turbulent our circumstances may become, the peace of Christ stands in stark contrast to human anxieties. The disciples' doubt—expressed through their initial fear and disbelief in the face of the miraculous—resonates with our own struggles. How often do we find ourselves wrestling with doubt in our own lives, struggling to believe in the promises of God?
In His compassion, Jesus invites them to examine His body, showing them His hands and feet, marked by the crucifixion but now embodying resurrection life (Luke 24:39). This tangible evidence is a powerful reminder that our faith is not built on vague notions but on the real, physical actions of God in history. The Gospel does not shy away from difficult truths; it embraces them. Jesus addresses their doubt with an invitation to touch, to experience, and to believe. How essential it is for us to seek out and touch the reality of God’s presence in our lives, whether through His Word or through the community He has established.
Importantly, the risen Christ imparts knowledge to them: “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” (Luke 24:44). By opening their minds to understand the Scriptures, He illuminates the continuity of God’s salvific plan, instilling hope and confirming their mission. We, too, must engage with the Scriptures, allowing them to reveal the character of God and His promises to us, especially in times of doubt.
As Jesus commissions them, He reflects a shift from a passive reception of faith to an active proclamation: “You are witnesses of these things.” (Luke 24:48). This is the call to each of us—to be messengers of the resurrection, sharing our testimonies, just like the two on the road to Emmaus, of how Christ has moved in our lives. We are not just recipients of grace but also agents of it, participating in the divine story by sharing the hope of the Gospel.
Finally, we witness Jesus’ ascension into heaven, a defining moment of empowerment for the disciples. His blessing gives them a new purpose, for He promises that they will be clothed with power from on high (Luke 24:49). With the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, they are equipped to minister boldly and effectively in a world ripe for the Gospel message.
As we reflect on Luke 24:33-53, let us embrace the same joy and mission that invigorated the early disciples. May we remember that Jesus’ resurrection is not merely an event to be acknowledged but a reality to be lived. Let us be bold witnesses of His love, sharing the transformative power of His forgiveness and grace with a world in desperate need of hope and peace.
