From the Top to the Bottom: The Open Way to God

“And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.” (Mark 15:38, KJV)

Mark records a single sentence, yet it carries the weight of ages. “And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.” The veil was not a decorative curtain. It stood as a solemn boundary between sinful humanity and the holy presence of God. It preached a message without words: God is holy, and man is not. It reminded worshippers that access was limited, guarded, and costly. Even the most devout could not simply walk in.

Then, at the moment of Christ’s death, the veil was “rent in twain.” Not a small tear at the bottom where human hands might grasp and pull, but a rending “from the top to the bottom.” The direction matters. This was not man climbing upward to reach God; it was God acting downward toward man. The opening was not achieved by religious effort, moral improvement, or spiritual achievement. It was an act of heaven. The tear begins where human reach cannot begin—at the top—declaring that reconciliation is God’s work before it is ever felt as our comfort.

This rending also speaks of finality. A veil can be repaired, stitched, and rehung. But a veil torn through is a sign that something has ended. In this moment, the old barrier stood publicly exposed as a barrier God Himself was removing. The temple veil was the symbol of restricted access; its tearing was the sign of granted access. The death of Jesus Christ did not merely inspire better behavior; it altered the standing of those who come to God. The torn veil testifies that God has made a way for sinners to draw near.

Consider what this means for the conscience. Many live with an invisible veil—shame that says, “You have gone too far,” fear that says, “God is always disappointed,” and striving that says, “If you do enough, perhaps you will be accepted.” But Mark 15:38 declares that the decisive work was done at Calvary. The veil was torn not because we finally became worthy, but because Christ offered Himself. The presence of God is not reserved for the spiritually elite; it is opened to the repentant and believing. The torn veil is heaven’s announcement that the invitation is real.

The verse also challenges how we approach God. If the veil is torn, we must not live as though it still hangs. Some pray like outsiders—careful, distant, unsure whether they are permitted to speak. Some worship like hired servants—trying to earn a place at the table. But the rending of the veil declares that those who come through Christ may come with reverence and with confidence, not because God has become less holy, but because a holy God has provided a holy way.

Yet the torn veil does not teach casualness; it teaches costly access. The opening was purchased by suffering. The torn fabric points to a torn Savior, the Lamb of God who bore sin. Therefore, nearness to God is not cheap; it is gracious. When you feel the pull of guilt, remember: the veil was torn. When you feel the pressure to perform, remember: the veil was torn. When you feel uninvited, remember: the veil was torn “from the top to the bottom.”

Take time today to respond to this single sentence with faith. Enter God’s presence in prayer, confess sin honestly, and thank Him for the opened way. Lay down the exhausting habit of trying to make yourself acceptable by your own strength. If God tore the veil, you do not need to sew it back up with fear and self-reliance. You are invited to draw near—humbly, reverently, and freely—because Jesus Christ has made the way.

Deliver me from fear, from striving, and from shame. Help me to come to Thee with repentance and faith, trusting the way Thou hast opened. Amen.
