Mustard-Seed Faith in the Shadow of Mountains

“And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” — Matthew 17:20

Matthew 17:20 confronts us with both a diagnosis and a promise. Jesus begins plainly: “Because of your unbelief.” He does not excuse spiritual powerlessness by blaming circumstances, personalities, or complexity. He brings the issue to the heart. Unbelief is not merely the presence of questions; it is the posture that refuses to lean the weight of the soul upon God. It can look like resignation, like prayerless effort, like endless analysis, like self-protection that avoids disappointment by avoiding expectation. Jesus names it because He intends to heal it.

Then He speaks “verily”—a word of certainty, the stamp of heaven’s authority: “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed…” Jesus does not say, “If ye have faith as a mountain,” but as a seed. A mustard seed is not impressive by size. It is unimpressive, easy to overlook, easy to dismiss. Yet it is alive. It contains within it a reality far greater than its appearance. In the same way, genuine faith may begin small—fragile, trembling, mixed with weakness—but if it is real faith in a real God, it is living. The power is not in the believer’s emotional intensity; the power is in the God to whom that faith is directed.

Notice also what Jesus attaches to this mustard-seed faith: speech that comes from reliance—“ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place.” This is not a formula for controlling the world with religious words; it is the outward expression of inward trust. Mountains in our lives can take many forms: entrenched sin patterns that seem immovable, wounds that have shaped our identity for years, family conflicts that feel cemented, burdens of anxiety that return each morning, financial pressure that refuses to ease, habits of fear that dictate our decisions, or ministry assignments that feel beyond our strength. A “mountain” is whatever stands in the way of obedience and love—whatever seems too heavy, too old, too strong.

Jesus’ image is striking: the mountain moves “hence to yonder place.” In other words, it does not merely shrink; it relocates. God is not limited to small adjustments. He can change the terrain. He can open what seemed closed, soften what seemed hardened, restore what seemed wasted, and redeem what seemed irredeemable. Yet the verse begins with “Because of your unbelief,” reminding us that unbelief often keeps us negotiating with mountains instead of addressing them in God’s name—accepting them as permanent, rearranging our lives around them, and quietly lowering our hopes.

Still, Jesus does not shame the disciples into silence; He invites them into confidence. The promise is sweeping: “and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” This does not mean the believer becomes sovereign, as if every desire becomes a decree. Scripture never portrays faith as a tool to dethrone God’s wisdom. Rather, faith joins us to God’s will and God’s power. “Nothing shall be impossible unto you” means that no assignment God gives is ultimately blocked by any obstacle God allows. It means that when God calls you to forgive, the mountain of bitterness can move. When God calls you to purity, the mountain of addiction can move. When God calls you to witness, the mountain of fear can move. When God calls you to persevere, the mountain of despair can move. Not because you are strong, but because God is faithful.

So what does mustard-seed faith look like today? It looks like praying when you do not feel impressive. It looks like obeying the next clear command of Christ even while your emotions lag behind. It looks like refusing to interpret God’s silence as God’s absence. It looks like placing one trembling “yes” on the altar and trusting that the Lord multiplies what we surrender.

Ask yourself: Where have I made peace with unbelief? What mountain have I labeled “impossible” that Jesus calls movable? Bring that mountain into prayer with honesty. Confess unbelief without pretending. Then, with whatever faith you have—however small—place it in the hands of Christ. A mustard seed does not need to be large; it needs to be planted.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive me for unbelief. Plant in me true faith, even if it begins as small as a grain of mustard seed. Teach me to speak and act in obedience to You. Move what I cannot move, change what I cannot change, and help me trust that nothing You call me to is impossible. Amen.
