The Consequence of Unbelief: A Lesson from Numbers 20:12
“And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.” — Numbers 20:12
As believers, we often find ourselves in the midst of challenges that test our faith and commitment. The verse from Numbers 20:12 serves as a poignant reminder of the heavy cost of unbelief, not just for ourselves but also for those we are called to lead.
In the King James Version, the verse reads: "And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.” This verse captures a pivotal moment in the journey of the Israelites, one that underscores the severity of disbelief, even among those chosen to lead God’s people.
Moses and Aaron had been entrusted with the leadership of the Israelites, who were bound for the Promised Land. Yet, in a moment of doubt and disobedience, they did not align their actions with the trust God called them to show. Instead of honoring God's command to speak to the rock to bring forth water for the people, they struck the rock in frustration (Numbers 20:11). This act was not simply a misstep; it was a failure to manifest faith in God's provision and holiness before the people. God’s response is stark and immediate. The leadership that Moses and Aaron had harbored, their direct relationship with the Almighty, did not exempt them from the consequences of their actions.
This passage leads us to examine our own lives. How often do we find ourselves in situations where, out of frustration or fear, we choose to respond in ways that do not glorify God? Like Moses and Aaron, we might know God's commands and promises, yet allow doubt to overshadow our belief, affecting not only our own journey but also the journey of those we influence. We may stumble when facing adversities, yet our responses can impact the faith of others around us more than we realize.
The key part of the verse emphasizes the need to "sanctify" God in the eyes of others. Sanctification here means to depict God's holiness and righteousness through our actions and testimony. Our lives should serve as a reflection of the God we serve—a mirror of His character, His promises, and His sovereignty. When we align our belief with our actions, we bring glory to His name, reinforcing the faith of those watching us, especially in times of trial and leadership.
However, the consequences of failing to sanctify God can be dire, as illustrated in the punishment of Moses and Aaron. They were denied entry into the land flowing with milk and honey—a land they had yearned for and led others toward. This was no small consequence; it was a moment that reflects the reality that God tolerates no dilution of His holiness. Those in spiritual authority carry a heavy responsibility, and their failures can reverberate throughout their communities. We are reminded that our actions can result in historical consequences that theologians call the ‘relational’ or ‘communal’ aspect of sin: that our personal beliefs and actions affect the wider body of believers.
Today, as we reflect on Numbers 20:12, let us ask ourselves: How can we better sanctify God in our own lives, in the eyes of those around us? Are we living in a way that reflects the holiness of God? Have we abandoned faith in moments of need? This verse not only serves as a warning against unbelief but also as an encouragement to uphold the truth of who God is—the Great Provider, the Holy One, worthy of all our trust, even in the midst of daunting challenges.
In conclusion, let us recommit ourselves to believe fully and act faithfully in accordance with God's directives, recognizing the weight of our witness. May we lead by example, ensuring that our lives sanctify God in our communities and reflect His glory to a world longing for hope and truth.
