Strong Confidence in Holy Fear

“In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.” (Proverbs 14:26, KJV)

At first glance, this verse can sound surprising. We often think of fear as the enemy of confidence. Fear makes hands tremble, minds race, and hearts shrink back. Yet Proverbs declares that there is a kind of fear that does not weaken you—it strengthens you. “In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence.” This is not the fear that comes from dread, uncertainty, or the threat of being abandoned. This is reverent fear: a steady, holy awareness of who God is—His power, His purity, His authority, His faithfulness, and His right to rule our lives.

The fear of the LORD is the recognition that God is not like us. He is not shifting or unreliable. He is not confused by our circumstances or limited by our resources. When we fear Him, we stop treating Him casually. We stop placing Him in the background, as if He were only an emergency option. We begin to live as though His word is true, His commands are good, and His presence is real. That kind of fear anchors a person. It produces “strong confidence” because it relocates our trust from ourselves to God.

Notice what the proverb does not say. It does not say strong confidence comes from perfect planning, a painless life, or a personality that never struggles. It does not say confidence is found in being admired by others or being financially secure. It says that strong confidence is found “in the fear of the LORD.” In other words, confidence grows best in a heart that bows. The world preaches self-confidence—confidence built on your ability, your image, your control. But self-confidence breaks whenever your strength fails, whenever your reputation is questioned, whenever your plans collapse. The fear of the LORD builds a different kind of confidence: confidence that rests on God’s character rather than your performance.

This kind of confidence is “strong” because it is not dependent on ideal conditions. When your circumstances are unstable, the fear of the LORD reminds you that God is not. When you feel small, reverent fear reminds you that He is great. When you have sinned, the fear of the LORD does not push you into hiding as if God cannot be approached—it pushes you toward honesty, repentance, and renewed obedience, because you take God seriously. And when you are tempted to compromise to gain approval or relief, the fear of the LORD gives you backbone. If God is truly God, then no other voice deserves final authority.

Then the verse adds a promise that expands beyond the individual believer: “and his children shall have a place of refuge.” There is a generational blessing tied to reverent faith. This does not mean faithful parents can control every outcome in their children’s lives. But it does mean that a home ordered by the fear of the LORD becomes a shelter in a harsh world. When a parent fears the LORD, God’s ways shape the atmosphere: truth is honored, sin is not excused, forgiveness is practiced, and prayer is not merely a tradition but a lifeline. Children raised in such an environment may still face storms, but they learn where refuge is found.

A “place of refuge” is more than a comfortable setting. Refuge is what you run to when danger is real. It is protection when you cannot protect yourself. It is rest when you are weary and threatened. The fear of the LORD teaches children—and all who watch our lives—that the safest place is not a life with no troubles, but a life under God’s rule. Refuge is not the absence of storms; refuge is the presence of the Lord in the storm.

This proverb invites a personal question: What fear is governing you? Are you driven by the fear of failure, the fear of rejection, the fear of loss, the fear of tomorrow? Those fears demand constant payment, and they never deliver peace. But “the fear of the LORD” produces a different fruit: strong confidence. It creates a life that can stand upright, even when feelings fluctuate. It produces stability because it is rooted in God, not in the shifting ground of human circumstances.

Today, ask the Lord to deepen your reverence for Him—not a terrified shrinking away, but a humble awareness that He is holy and you belong to Him. Let that holy fear reorder your decisions, your speech, your priorities, and your home. As you take God seriously, you will find what Proverbs promises: “strong confidence.” And as you walk in that reverent trust, you will also help create for others—especially the next generation—“a place of refuge.”
