"What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me." - Psalms 56:3-4

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.” (Psalm 56:3–4, KJV)

Fear has a way of arriving uninvited. It can come in the middle of the night with racing thoughts, or in broad daylight through a difficult phone call, a medical report, a financial pressure, a strained relationship, or a sudden uncertainty about the future. Psalm 56 does not pretend that fear is imaginary or that faithful people never feel it. David says plainly, “What time I am afraid”—not “if,” but “when.” This honesty is part of the Bible’s mercy: it gives us permission to admit our trembling without pretending we are stronger than we are.

Yet the turning point of these verses is not the presence of fear, but the decision that follows it: “I will trust in thee.” Trust is not the denial of danger; it is the placing of your weight on God when danger is real. David’s life contained genuine threats—human opposition, misunderstandings, betrayal, and physical peril. He knew what it meant to be outmatched. Still, he declares a deliberate response: when fear rises, he will not let fear lead. He will choose trust.

Notice how David strengthens that trust: “In God I will praise his word.” Fear often thrives on imagined outcomes and unanswered questions. It multiplies when our minds loop through worst-case scenarios. David interrupts that cycle by focusing on what God has already spoken. God’s “word” is steady when circumstances are unstable. Praising God’s word means more than agreeing that Scripture is true; it means honoring it, leaning on it, and letting it shape the emotional climate of the soul. Praise turns our attention away from the size of our problem and toward the character of our God.

David repeats himself for emphasis: “in God I have put my trust.” This is not a passing thought; it is a settled placement. Trust is something you “put” somewhere. We all put trust somewhere—into our resources, our plans, our reputation, our ability to control outcomes, or the approval of others. But those foundations shake. David chooses God as the resting place of his confidence. He places his trust where it can bear weight.

Then comes the fruit of that trust: “I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.” The phrase “flesh” reminds us that human power is limited. People can threaten, accuse, abandon, or oppose, but they are still “flesh.” Their reach is real, but it is not ultimate. Trust in God does not always remove conflict; it removes the tyranny of fear. It reorders reality: God is greater than what frightens you, and God’s authority outruns every human limitation.

This passage also teaches that courage is not a personality trait reserved for the naturally bold. Courage is often the quiet, repeated act of returning to God. “What time I am afraid” can happen many times in the same day. Each time, the invitation remains: trust again, praise again, place your confidence again. Fear may knock repeatedly, but you do not have to give it the keys to your heart.

If you are facing something today that makes you feel small—uncertainty, criticism, rejection, temptation, waiting, or grief—let these verses become your practiced prayer. Say to the Lord exactly what David said. Tell Him you are afraid. Then choose the next line on purpose: “I will trust in thee.” Praise His word when your feelings fluctuate. Put your trust where it belongs. And as that trust takes root, you will find strength to say, with growing sincerity, “I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.”

Prayer: Lord, Thou knowest what frightens me. When I am afraid, teach me to trust in Thee. Help me to praise Thy word, to put my trust in God, and to refuse fear of what flesh can do. Establish my heart in Thy faithfulness. Amen.
