Held by the Right Hand: Counsel for Today, Glory for Tomorrow

“Nevertheless I [am] continually with thee: thou hast holden [me] by my right hand.

Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me [to] glory.” (Psalm 73:23–24, KJV)

Psalm 73 is the honest prayer of a believer whose heart has been shaken. Asaph looks around and sees the prosperity of the wicked and the pain of the faithful, and for a moment it seems like righteousness is unrewarded and evil is winning. Yet these two verses are a turning point. They are not spoken from the mountaintop of easy faith, but from the place where faith has wrestled with confusion and come out holding tighter to God than to explanations.

The first word matters: “Nevertheless.” It signals a holy refusal to let appearances have the final word. “Nevertheless” means, “Even if my feelings have been unstable, even if my understanding has been limited, even if my circumstances have been discouraging—this remains true.” What remains true? “I [am] continually with thee.” Notice the emphasis is not on Asaph’s ability to stay with God, but on the reality that, in the covenant love of God, the believer is not abandoned. There is an unbroken nearness here. Not occasional. Not seasonal. Continual.

Then comes the tenderness of God’s action: “thou hast holden [me] by my right hand.” This is not merely God pointing the way; it is God taking hold of the traveler. The right hand in Scripture often represents strength, skill, and the hand by which one works and defends. To be held “by my right hand” is to have God steady what would otherwise shake. It is as if the psalmist is saying, “Even when I nearly slipped, I did not finally fall, because Your grip was on me.” The comfort is not that your hand never trembles; the comfort is that His hand never fails.

Many believers live as though God’s presence is proven only by felt warmth or obvious success. But this verse teaches a deeper assurance: God’s presence can be most real precisely when you are most aware of your weakness. If you have been held, you can confess that the reason you made it through was not superior discipline, superior clarity, or superior strength; it was the Lord’s sustaining grasp.

The promise continues: “Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel.” God’s guidance is not merely directional; it is relational and wise. “Counsel” suggests personal instruction—truth applied to real life. God does not guide us only by moving our circumstances; He guides us by shaping our judgment, correcting our desires, and teaching our hearts. In seasons where you cannot see what God is doing, you can still cling to what God is saying. His counsel comes through His Word, and by His Spirit pressing that Word into the conscience and into daily choices.

This guidance also implies process. He “shalt guide”—ongoing, step-by-step. God often does not hand us a map for the next decade; He gives enough light for the next obedient step. The psalmist’s confidence is not in his ability to predict the future but in God’s commitment to lead him. When you don’t know which way to turn, you may pray with quiet trust: “Lord, guide me with thy counsel.” Not simply, “Show me what I want,” but, “Shape me into what You desire.”

Finally, the horizon of faith stretches beyond this life: “and afterward receive me [to] glory.” This is the anchor that steadies the believer when the present seems unfair. Asaph has looked at the apparent “end” of the wicked and realized that earthly prosperity is not the final verdict. Here he confesses an even better “afterward”—not merely improved circumstances, but God Himself receiving him into glory. The Christian’s future is not ultimately an outcome; it is a welcome. Not merely a destination; it is being “received” by the Lord.

Put together, Psalm 73:23–24 offers a complete comfort: God’s presence now (“continually with thee”), God’s support now (“holden [me] by my right hand”), God’s guidance now (“guide me with thy counsel”), and God’s consummation later (“afterward receive me [to] glory”). If your faith feels bruised by what you see around you, these verses call you to rest not in what you can figure out, but in who is holding you.

Prayer: Lord, when my heart is confused and my steps are unsteady, remind me that I am continually with Thee. Thank Thee that Thou hast holden me by my right hand. Guide me with Thy counsel today—shape my choices, steady my thoughts, and guard my heart. And when my journey is finished, receive me to glory. Amen.
