A Prayer for Wisdom and Understanding in Times of Division
"¶ And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king." - 1 Kings 11:26

O Heavenly Father, Maker of the heavens and the earth, into Your presence I humbly come as I meditate upon the story of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, whose actions and decisions profoundly affected the course of Israel’s history. Father, You have preserved these accounts in Your holy scriptures for our learning, and as I reflect upon 1 Kings 11:26—which says, “And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king”—I seek to understand the depth of Your Word and its implications for our lives today.
Lord, I acknowledge that Jeroboam, once a servant to King Solomon, grew discontented amidst the riches and glory of his master’s reign. However, instead of turning to You for guidance and a spirit of contentment, he chose the path of rebellion. Speak to me through this Scripture, O Lord, and help me to glean wisdom from Jeroboam’s unfortunate choice to lift his hand against his king. Encourage my spirit, Lord, that I might always find solace in Your presence and seek Your counsel in times when I feel weighed down by my circumstances.
I recognize, dear God, the temptation to grasp at power and influence, echoing Jeroboam's insurrection. May I never allow pride to divert me from Your path. Let humility reign in my heart, that I might serve others rather than seek to elevate myself above my station. Teach me the grace of submission, to honor those who are placed in authority over me, even as I pursue justice and righteousness in my own life.
Father, just as Jeroboam’s mother, Zeruah, a widow, represents a position of vulnerability, let me be ever aware of those around me who are in need. May I be their strength and advocate, seeking to uplift those who society may overlook. Open my eyes to see the injustices in the world and give me a heart to respond with compassion and love. Help me understand that true leadership is birthed from servanthood and that my actions echo loudly in the lives of those I am called to influence.
As I consider Jeroboam’s rise—a servant of King Solomon who turned against him—I am reminded of the fragility of human ambition. Lord, protect my heart from ambitions that do not honor You. As I strive toward my goals, may I do so with integrity and a commitment to Your will. Keep my heart steadfast, that I may not find myself in adversarial positions against those You've appointed in leadership, whether in church, in community, or in the workplace.
O Sovereign God, I pray for leaders today. May they be inspired to seek after truth and to act with justice and mercy. Instill in them a spirit of humility and an unwavering commitment to You, so that they would lead with the wisdom that comes from above, refusing to succumb to the Jeroboam spirit that seeks division. May they surround themselves with wise counsel and not plot against Your anointed.
I ask You, Lord, to fill me with the Holy Spirit, that I may learn to navigate my relationships with grace and wisdom, speaking truth in love, and confronting wrongdoing when necessary, always remembering to honor You above all. May my life reflect Your light in a world that can be dark and divisive.
In all my endeavors, may every thought, word, and action be rooted in love and truth, as I commit my plans and desires to You, trusting that You will lead me along the righteous path. Thank You, Lord, for Your patience, Your guidance, and Your unending love. It is in the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, that I pray. Amen.
