O Heavenly Father,

In humble reverence, I come before You today, laden with the weight of decisions that often shape the hearts and lives of those whom we lead. I reflect upon the critical moments in leadership highlighted in 1 Kings 12:8, where it says, "But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him." Lord, in this verse, we find a profound lesson about the importance of wisdom and thoughtful counsel.

Father, as we navigate the complexities of our influence in this world, I beseech You to instill in us a discerning heart, one that values and seeks out the wisdom of experience. Help us to recognize that counsel from those who have walked the path before us carries invaluable lessons and knowledge. Our minds often lean towards the voices that echo with youthful enthusiasm and fresh ideas, but I pray that we remember the rich tapestry of experience that elder voices provide.

Lord, in this age where haste often squelches patience, where the loudest voice tends to drown out the wisest, I pray You would grant us the humility to listen. Help us to understand that the wisdom of our elders is not just a relic of the past but a guiding light illuminating our present path. May our ears be attuned to their insights, and may our hearts be soft to receive their guidance. Let us not be blinded by the allure of newness, but rather grounded in the strong foundation of time-tested truths.

O Lord, we confess that, too often, we look for validation among those who support our immediate desires rather than seeking the deeper truths found in wise counsel. Forgive us for the times we have turned away from the insight of those who have trodden the path of leadership before us. Instill within us the courage to seek the perspectives of the seasoned, the wise, the humble servants of Your Word—those who have persevered through trials and have emerged with wisdom forged in the fires of experience.

I pray for leaders in every sphere of life—be it in our homes, workplaces, communities, or nations—bless them with the grace to seek counsel wisely. Give them the strength to resist the urge to rely solely upon their contemporaries. Lord, guide them to engage with mentors, to build relationships with those who bear the scars of their own battles, and to listen to the tales of overcoming adversity.

As we reflect specifically on the counsel of the old men that was forsaken, let us scrutinize our own tendencies to dismiss wisdom in favor of fleeting popularity. Teach us that true leadership is not about gathering followers but about gathering wisdom to make decisions that honor You and benefit those entrusted to our care. No decision is made in a vacuum; every choice we make has a rippling effect on our families, our communities, and beyond.

Fill our hearts with a spirit of discernment so that we may recognize the value in diverse voices. Lord, help us cultivate an environment where both the young and the old can share insight and vision. May we bridge the generational gaps with respect and love for one another, learning from each other in our pursuit of justice, mercy, and humility.
