A Prayer for Preservation and Provision in Times of Drought
"And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts." - 1 Kings 18:5

O Most High God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, we come before Your Throne of Grace with hearts heavy with the burden of drought and barrenness in our lives, as reflected in the story of Ahab and Obadiah. In 1 Kings 18:5, we see Ahab’s plea: "Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts." In this earnest cry for sustenance, we recognize the dire necessity for Your provision in times of great need.
Lord, just as Ahab sent Obadiah on a quest for water and sustenance, we too find ourselves seeking nourishment for our spirits, our families, and our communities. We acknowledge that we often wander through dry seasons, grappling with spiritual drought, emotional depletion, and financial strain. We turn our eyes to You, the Source of all life, knowing that You have the power to restore our dry bones, to bring forth rivers in the desert, and to breathe life where there seems to be none.
Heavenly Father, as we traverse the wilderness of uncertainty, we request that You guide our steps, just as You guided Obadiah. May we be led to the fountains of water that You have prepared for us, to the brooks that still flow with Your abundant grace. Lord, grant us the wisdom to discern the paths that lead to spiritual refreshment and the courage to pursue them wholeheartedly.
We pray for Your sustenance, Lord. Just as Ahab was concerned for the horses and mules, we bring our own cares and concerns to You today. We ask for Your provision over our lives—over our health, our finances, our relationships. May we not lose any of the precious gifts You have entrusted to us, but instead, may we find that which is lacking. When we feel as if we are on the verge of losing all that we have worked for, remind us of Your promises. Help us to trust that You can multiply our little into abundance and that You can turn our lack into plenty.
In this season of drought, let our faith be como rain that nourishes the ground. Help us to remain steadfast and trust in Your timing. While Ahab and Obadiah sought earthly solutions, we lift our eyes to the heavens to seek Your face. We pray that You would send down Your rainfall—Your blessings, Your mercy, and Your love. May we receive with open hearts the abundance You desire to pour into our lives.
Gracious God, we fully understand that sometimes the wait can feel unbearable. In those moments of doubt or despair, may we cling to Your Word and remember that You are with us even in the midst of our struggles. Lord, inspire us with a spirit of hope, for even in the harshest seasons, Your purpose is at work. Just as Ahab’s journey was not just about finding water but about restoring that which seemed lost, likewise, may our journeys also bring restoration and renewal.
Finally, we pray for those around us who are also feeling the weight of this drought. Embolden us to be instruments of Your peace and provision for others in need. Let us not only seek our own needs but also the needs of our neighbors and communities. Cause us to be a source of refreshment for those who are thirsty, both materially and spiritually.
We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, who is our Living Water, and who promises that whoever drinks from Him will never thirst again. Amen.
