A Prayer of Sacrifice and Generosity Inspired by 2 Chronicles 35:7
"And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king's substance." - 2 Chronicles 35:7

O Lord Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, we come before You today with humble hearts, recognizing Your infinite wisdom and mercy. We are reminded of Your servant Josiah, whose heart was turned towards You and Your commandments, and who exemplified the spirit of generosity and sacrifice in his reign. Just as Josiah provided for the people by giving them lambs and kids for the Passover offerings, we too desire to embody Your love and kindness in our actions towards others. In 2 Chronicles 35:7, it is written, "And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king's substance." We glean from these words, not only the abundance of Josiah’s giving but also the spirit of unity and communal worship that brought the people together in remembrance of Your mighty deeds.
O Holy One, instill in us the same passion that Josiah had for Your presence and Your commands. Help us, O Lord, to cherish the rituals of faith and the importance of remembrance—remembrance of how You delivered Your people from bondage, how You provided sustenance in the desert, and how You lead us daily in our lives. As You called the Israelites to sacrifice during Passover, turn our hearts towards sacrifices of our own—whether in service, resources, or time. May we recognize that all we have comes from You and that we are merely stewards of Your gifts.
Father, teach us to give, not just out of our abundance but from the depths of our souls. Let us understand that true generosity flows from a heart that is rooted in gratitude for what You have done and continue to do for us. Josiah’s gift of thirty thousand lambs and kids and three thousand bullocks represents a heart overflowing with gratitude and a desire to bless others. Help us to offer our lives as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable unto You, which is our reasonable service (Romans 12:1). May we find joy in sharing our blessings with others and recognize that in doing so, we reflect Your love for the world.
Lord, remind us of the importance of community in our walk of faith. Just as Josiah gathered the people to partake in the Passover offerings together, help us to foster relationships that encourage communal worship and collective remembrance of Your goodness. May we gather in Your name, strengthening one another through our shared experiences and stories of Your faithfulness. Let our gatherings be filled with both joy and reverence as we honor You, and may our hearts be ever open to those who come seeking Your presence among us.
Great God, we also pray for those who find themselves in need, just as the people relied upon the king’s provisions during the Passover feast. Equip us to be vessels of Your provision, using what we have to support those in need around us. Help us to be aware of the cries of the marginalized and the silent sufferings of our brothers and sisters. Inspire us to reflect the heart of Josiah by offering our resources—material, emotional, and spiritual—as we cultivate a community of hope and support.
As we move forward, Lord, may we be continually inspired by the legacy of pure-hearted leaders like Josiah. Let us remember to seek You above all things, to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to give without reservation. We thank You for the opportunity to give and for the blessings You have poured into our lives. May we sacrifice lovingly, generously, and joyfully as a response to Your incredible goodness. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
