A Prayer for Strength in Times of Opposition
"¶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men." - 2 Samuel 10:6

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You in this moment of prayer, I humbly reflect on the profound lesson found in 2 Samuel 10:6 – "And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men." Lord, this scripture speaks to the reality of our human struggles, our battles, and the opposition that we sometimes face in our lives.
Father, I stand in awe of Your power and Your ability to deliver Your people from danger and distress. I acknowledge that like the children of Ammon, there are times when we too might find ourselves in a position of fear, shame, or defeat. We might feel isolated or attacked from all sides, and in these moments, it can be tempting to respond with anger, pride, or despair. Yet, looking at this verse, I am reminded that the opposition we face often leads us to seek help from places that may not align with Your will, as the Ammonites sought help from foreign nations.
Lord, I pray for discernment to recognize when I might be tempted to look elsewhere for help rather than turning to You, the Almighty God. Help me to understand and internalize that true strength, guidance, and support comes from You alone. May I remember that even in times of great pressure or opposition, I can rest in the confidence of who You are – my protector, my refuge, and my fortress.
God, I also seek Your wisdom in how I respond to conflict and strife. When I face opposition, let me not react out of fear or insecurity, but let me be anchored in Your Holy Spirit. Teach me to lean on You, to pray fervently and to seek wise counsel from godly friends and family. Help me to be a peacemaker and a reflection of Your love, even when faced with challenges.
As I think of the strategic alliances that the children of Ammon attempted to form, I am reminded that there are moments in our lives when we seek alliance in places that could lead us astray. Keep me from falling into the trap of relying on human strength or worldly wisdom that could lead to further complicating the situation rather than resolving it. Let my heart, Lord, be attuned to Your voice and Your guidance.
I pray specifically for those who are feeling overwhelmed by the opposition they may be facing today. If they feel they are in a battle that seems insurmountable, may they know that You are with them. Strengthen their faith and renew their hope, reminding them that You have already won the ultimate victory.
Dear Lord, help us to rise above petty conflicts and to face our adversaries with courage and integrity. Equip us with the armor of God, as spoken in Ephesians 6:10-18, so that we might stand firm against the schemes of the enemy. Let us put on truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God as our defense in every battle we face.
May we also learn to celebrate the victories and lessons learned through each struggle, understanding that they shape us into the people you desire us to become. Help us to share these stories of Your faithfulness with others, becoming a source of encouragement for those who may feel defeated.
In all things, Lord, I seek Your glory and Your sovereign will for my life. Thank You for being my ever-present help in times of trouble. May my prayers, my words, my deeds, and my heart always align with Your purpose and honor Your name.
In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
