A Prayer of Sorrow and Strength from the Mount of Olivet
"¶ And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up." - 2 Samuel 15:30

O Sovereign Lord,
As I come before You today, I am reminded of the poignant scene depicted in 2 Samuel 15:30, where King David ascended the heights of Mount Olivet in great sorrow. The Scripture recounts, "And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up." Lord, what powerful imagery! Here, we witness not just a king in distress, but a man of God grappling with deep, personal grief; a leader humbled by the betrayal of those closest to him, willing to go barefoot, shedding his royal robes, and expressing his innermost anguish before You.
Lord, I come to You on my knees, acknowledging that life is often filled with profound sorrows, losses, and burdens. Like David, I too have climbed mountains of despair, faced trials that have tested my faith, and experienced moments of profound heartache. Today, I weep for my own struggles and for those in the world who are suffering, perhaps feeling just as King David did—afraid, alone, or forsaken.
I pray for the strength that only You can provide. In those moments when the world seems heavy upon my shoulders, teach me to lift my eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help. Remind me, O God, that my help comes from You—the maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:1-2). Just as David found solace in Your presence, help me to seek refuge as I navigate my own challenging circumstances. Lord, even amidst tears, I pray for the embers of hope to stay lit within me, igniting my spirit to rise above sorrow.
Help me to cover my head in humility, recognizing my need for Your grace, reminding me that sorrow can lead to a deeper relationship with You. Allow me to embrace my weakness, so that I may be overtaken by Your strength—transforming my weeping into worship.
As I reflect on David’s ascent, I also consider the collective sorrow of Your people. As he mourned, surrounded by those who shared in his pain, let us not forget the power of unity in affliction. Lord, as we climb our own mountains of anguish, may we be mindful to not isolate ourselves from those who walk with us. Teach us to lean on one another for support, to share our burdens, and to encourage one another in times of trial.
Lord, I pray for those who, like David, are fleeing from what once was. Help us to remember that even in moments of fleeing, there exists an opportunity for finding You anew on the journey. May every tear, every cry of pain, become a seed that produces growth, resilience, and testimony of Your unwavering love and faithfulness.
As I continue on my own path of sorrow, I pray for healing, not only for my own heart but for the hearts of many. I pray for restoration of relationships that have been broken, for forgiveness to flow like a river, and for reconciliation where there is division. May my ascent be not only for my own grief but as a lift for others, recognizing that together we can carry each other's burdens (Galatians 6:2).
Finally, Lord, while we navigate our personal Mount Olivets, may our eyes be fixed on You, the One who bore our pain and shame, who walked the path of sorrow, so that we might find eternal joy in You. Let the tears of today be part of a greater narrative of salvation and hope.
In Jesus' Name, I pray. Amen.
