"Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few. But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus. And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things. And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go." - Acts 17:1-9
O Lord, our God, with hearts bowed in reverence and gratitude, we come before You, recognizing the profound significance of Your Word as recorded in Acts 17:1-9. Lord, we recognize that the message of Christ can provoke envy and strife among those who do not believe, as demonstrated in the hostility faced by Paul and Silas. We pray for the strength to endure such challenges when they arise, knowing that opposition does not determine the truth of Your Word. May we remain steadfast in our commitment to share the gospel, even when faced with ridicule, misunderstanding, or threat—just as Paul showed resilience amidst uproar and calamity.
We lift up those who are in positions like Jason, who welcomed Paul and Silas into his home. May we be willing to support and uplift one another in our ministries, even when it may lead to social unrest or persecution. Lord, we ask that You provide safety and protection for all who stand firm in the faith, particularly those in adversarial regions or environments where proclaiming Your name can lead to hardship. Surround them with Your angels, and let their voices not be silenced.
We also pray for those who are moved by envy, as was seen among the Jews who did not believe. Stir their hearts, O Lord, and confront them with the truth of the gospel. Remove the scales from their eyes, so they may see Christ, the true King, who reigns in righteousness. May Your Spirit soften their hardened hearts and provoke a spirit of inquiry that leads to transformation and belief.
Finally, we thank You for the multiplication of believers during this time in Thessalonica. May Your church continue to grow, drawing in those who would harken unto Your call. Let us rejoice in the fellowship we share and may we be known as those who have turned our communities upside down for the glory of Your name.
