A Prayer for Wisdom and Respect for Authority
"Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people." - Acts 23:5

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You in humility and reverence today, I am reminded of the words spoken by the Apostle Paul in Acts 23:5, where he acknowledges, "I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people." Lord, I thank You for this profound verse that teaches us about the importance of respecting those in authority over us. Though Paul did not recognize the high priest in that moment, he reminded us of the command to honor our leaders and speak no evil against them.
In a world where criticism of authority is rampant, I ask for Your guidance to help me cultivate a heart of respect, even when I may not understand the actions or decisions of those in leadership. Help me, Lord, to discern the difference between righteous criticism and ungodly speaking against the rulers appointed over us. Give me wisdom and clarity to know when to speak up in love, and when to remain silent in honor.
Gracious God, I lift up all those in positions of authority: our leaders, both in the church and in the world. I pray that they would have an increase of wisdom and discernment in every decision they make. Encourage their hearts, Lord, and fortify their spirits as they navigate the complexities of leadership. May they seek guidance from You, the ultimate authority, and may their hearts be inclined to righteousness and justice.
Father, as I reflect on Paul’s acknowledgment of his oversight, let me also be aware of my own presuppositions and judgments. Often, I may unknowingly speak ill of others due to my lack of understanding or insight. Grant me the humility to recognize that behind every leadership position lies the challenge of governing imperfect people, and that no one is beyond the need for grace. Help me to extend that grace to others, especially to those who have been placed in leadership roles.
I also pray for my own words and actions, Lord. Let them be a reflection of Your love and truth. Guard my tongue against slander and bitterness. Remind me of the significance of my words and their potential impact. Your Word teaches us that the tongue can be a source of great blessing or destruction; let mine be a conduit of Your peace and respect.
In moments when I feel frustrated or disagree with a leader, whether at work, in the community, or within the church, may I approach the situation with grace instead of malice. Let me first seek understanding and the bigger picture before voicing objections. Help me to remember that my role as a believer is to uplift, encourage, and pray for those who lead.
Lord Jesus, You modeled perfect respect for authority, even when Your own was unjustly exercised. As we reflect on Your example, I am humbled by Your celestial wisdom and Your willingness to submit to the will of the Father. Empower me to adopt that same attitude when confronting authority, knowing that all power and authority ultimately comes from You.
Let the Holy Spirit fill my heart with compassion for leaders and give them the strength they need to lead wisely. May Your light shine through all of us, illuminating the path for those who govern and guide.
In closing, Lord, help me to honor You through my thoughts, words, and actions as I fulfill my responsibilities as a citizen of heaven and of this world. I trust in Your sovereignty and love, and I thank You for the authority You have established among us. May my life be aligned with Your will, echoing the essence of Paul’s understanding, as I strive to live out Your command to not speak evil of the ruler of Your people.
In the name of Jesus, I pray,
Amen.
