A Prayer for True Repentance and Righteousness
"¶ Come to Beth-el, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years:" - Amos 4:4

O Sovereign Lord, Maker of Heaven and Earth,
As we come before Thy holy presence, we bring our hearts—a mixture of gratitude, humility, and contrition. We reflect on Thy words spoken through Thy prophet Amos, ‘Come to Beth-el, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years.’ (Amos 4:4 KJV).
Father, it is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the richness of this exhortation. In the serenity of Beth-el, the House of God, Thy people are beckoned to gather. Yet, Lord, it appears that even in places of worship, transgression lurks beneath the surface. How easily do we slip into complacency and ritualism! We confess that too often, we bring our offerings as mere tokens while our hearts remain far from Thee. Forgive us, O Lord, for the times we have engaged in worship that falls short of true devotion.
We beseech Thee for true repentance, O God. May our gatherings in Thy name not merely be expressions of outward piety but rather heartfelt cries for spiritual awakening. Let us not take our sacrifices lightly, thinking that mere ritual will suffice when our spirits rise in rebellion. Teach us, Father, the essence of sacrifice that pleases Thee—one of a contrite heart and a humble spirit, as David so aptly penned.
Heavenly Father, as Amos warns us to not only engage in sinful acts but to multiply them, we sit in deep self-reflection. Are we not guilty of this very transgression? In our pride, have we not multiplied our iniquities, deceiving ourselves into believing that our acts of service would placate the weight of our sins? Lord, we implore Thee to open our eyes to the gravity of our worship when it is devoid of sincerity.
Let us now turn our thoughts towards Gilgal—the place of remembrance. There, we remember the consecration of Thy people and their commitment to You. Yet, even there, Lord, we see the stark reminder of how quickly our hearts forget their first love. Redeem us from this cycle of sin, O God. Help us to remember that Thy grace calls us to holiness—to walk in righteousness, to live lives marked by integrity, and to offer up sacrifices of kindness and love, not just in the sanctuary, but in every moment of our daily existence.
Lord, as we bring our tithes after three years, let it not simply be a matter of fulfilling a requirement. Rather, may our offerings reflect the abundance with which You have blessed us. Let us be cheerful givers, recognized by our generosity and compassion toward the needy and the downtrodden—those whom You have called us to support. Teach us, O Lord, that true giving flows from a heart transformed by Your love.
We pray that You will cultivate in us a spirit of justice and mercy. Let us never forget that our worship should extend beyond the walls of our churches, influencing our actions, words, and deeds in the world around us. May the fragrance of our sacrifices rise before You, carrying with it the true essence of our love for You and our neighbors.
In Thy mercy, let our voices unite in repentance and worship. We come seeking not just forgiveness but a revival of spirit—a deep, burning desire to know You, a God who desires truth in the inward parts. May the echoes of our prayers rise as incense, and may our hearts be made pure, that our sacrifices may find favor in Your sight.
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior, with earnest hearts and unyielding faith, we pray.
Amen.
