A Prayer for Humility and Divine Calling
"¶ Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:" - Amos 7:14

Heavenly Father,
I come before You in prayer, O Lord, with a heart full of gratitude and awe for Your divine providence and purposeful calling upon our lives. Just as the prophet Amos proclaimed with courage and clarity when he said, "Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit" (Amos 7:14 KJV), I seek to understand my own journey and the ways in which You have chosen to guide me along the paths You have laid out for me.
Merciful God, I acknowledge that like Amos, many of us feel unworthy and unqualified in our spiritual callings. We may ask ourselves how we, ordinary individuals steeped in the plainness of daily existence, could possibly be vessels of Your message. We come into this world without accolades, without titles, and perhaps even without a clear sense of direction, yet You see us for who we are underneath our fears and uncertainties. You see potential where we see only limitation.
Lord, I ask that You help me embrace the simplicity of my own background and experiences. Just as You called Amos from among the herdmen, remind me that my past does not define my potential. My identity is rooted not in human acclaim but in being Your child, ready to serve and respond to Your call. Grant me the grace to accept that You are not confined to the expectations of the world, and that my humble beginnings can be transformed into a profound testimony of Your mighty works.
Help me to trust in Your perfect timing, O Lord. Teach me how to be faithful in the small and the mundane, just as Amos faithfully tended to his herds and cared for the sycomore trees. Instill in me a dedication to my responsibilities, no matter how insignificant they may appear, and show me how diligence in my daily life can lead to greater opportunities for service in Your kingdom. May I see my daily tasks as part of an overarching purpose; give me the vision to see that every seed sown with care can lead to a harvest of grace and truth.
Father, I also pray for the courage to voice the truths You place upon my heart, even if it may lead to discomfort, opposition, or a lack of recognition from others. Strengthen my resolve, so when I encounter those who may challenge or dismiss my message, I may respond with love, patience, and steadfastness. Remind me, Lord, that it is not my accolades or eloquence that will resonate but rather my sincerity and authenticity in proclaiming Your word. Help me to be like Amos, unashamed and unyielding in the face of adversity, rooted in the knowledge that I am speaking the truth You have imparted to me.
As I reflect upon the life of Amos, may it inspire me to seek clarity in my own calling. Help me recognize that while I may not be a prophet in the traditional sense, I can still be a mouthpiece for Your will and a bearer of hope. Show me how my everyday actions and interactions can reflect Your love and light, and help me to be an instrument of peace in my community and beyond.
In moments of fatigue or doubt, remind me, Lord, of Your promise that You equip those whom You call. May I find solace in Your presence, knowing that it is not through my strength but through Your grace that I can fulfil my purpose. Let me surrender my fears to You and embrace the rich tapestry of experiences You weave around my life, understanding that every moment is a chance to glorify You.
As I wholeheartedly dedicate my life and my work to You, O Lord, may Your will be done in and through me. May I always carry with me the lessons learned from Amos, knowing that while I may come from humble beginnings, I serve an extraordinary God whose reach knows no bounds. In Jesus’ name, I humbly pray, Amen.
