Before the Radiance of the Holy Messenger: A Prayer on Daniel 10:6

"His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude." - Daniel 10:6

"His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude." - Daniel 10:{verse.verse_number}

Most holy God, the Lord of heaven and earth, I come before Thee in reverence and trembling, acknowledging Thy greatness and Thy glory. Thou art the One who reigneth above all dominions, whose counsel standeth for ever, and whose word cannot be broken. I bless Thee for the witness of the Scriptures, and for the visions Thou gavest to Thy servant Daniel—visions that humble the heart and awaken the soul to the reality that Thy kingdom is not as the kingdoms of men.

Father, I set my thoughts upon the word that is written, and I receive it with fear of the Lord: “His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.” O God, this holy description lifts my mind from earthly distractions, and it reminds me that there is a glory that falleth upon Thy servants, and a majesty that attendeth Thy messages, and a purity that cannot be compared with the dimness of this world.

Lord, when I consider “His body also was like the beryl,” I pray that Thou wouldest make my inner life clear and true before Thee. Cleanse me from hidden sin, from double-mindedness, from all mixture of pride and self-seeking. Let my heart be made sincere, like a stone that reflecteth light without deceit. Grant unto me integrity in secret places, faithfulness in small duties, and a spirit that desireth holiness more than applause.

And when I consider that “his face” was “as the appearance of lightning,” I ask Thee to shine upon me with Thy countenance. Let the light of Thy presence scatter the shadows that linger in my thoughts. Break the power of fear, confusion, and heaviness. Give me discernment, that I may not walk in darkness; give me courage, that I may not shrink back from obedience. As lightning is swift and undeniable, let conviction be swift in me, and let repentance be real, that I may be restored quickly when I wander.

Lord, I meditate on this also: “his eyes as lamps of fire.” Thou seest all things, and nothing is hid from Thee. Thy gaze pierceth the outward appearance and beholdeth the intent of the heart. I confess that I often desire to be seen well by men, yet I need to be made right before Thee. Search me, O God, and try me. Burn away vanity, burn away bitterness, burn away the love of sin. Let Thy fiery eyes purify my motives, that I might serve Thee not for gain, nor for recognition, but for love and truth.

And I remember: “his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass.” Lord, I pray for strength that is steady and refined. Give me arms to labor in righteousness, and feet that walk in Thy ways. Keep me from stumbling into temptation; keep me from wandering into compromises that dull the conscience. Establish my steps by Thy word. Make me steadfast in trials, patient in waiting, and unmoved by the shifting opinions of this age.

Father, I also hear the last phrase, and it bows my soul: “the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.” Let Thy voice, O Lord, be greater in me than the many voices around me. Silence the clamor of anxiety, the noise of constant striving, the echoes of accusation, and the distractions that steal my attention. Teach me to listen. Give me ears to hear Thy word, a heart ready to obey, and a will submitted to Thy authority. May Thy voice be to me as a multitude—strong, sure, and commanding—so that when Thou speakest, doubt must flee, and when Thou leadest, I may follow.

God of Daniel, grant unto me humility before Thy majesty. If Thy messenger is described with such glory, how much more should I tremble before Thee, the Creator of all glory. Yet I thank Thee also that Thou art merciful, and that Thou drawest near to those that call upon Thee in truth. Strengthen my faith when spiritual things feel distant. Sustain me when prayer is hard. Help me to persevere in seeking Thee, to stand firm in spiritual conflict, and to trust that Thy purposes are working even when I cannot see.

Let my life, O Lord, reflect a holy reverence for the things of heaven. Make me sober, watchful, and ready. Teach me to honor Thy word, to cherish Thy presence, and to live as one who shall give account. And as Thy voice is mighty, make me gentle; as Thy light is bright, make me pure; as Thy fire is consuming, make me devoted; as Thy polished strength is steadfast, make me faithful.

All these things I ask with thanksgiving and awe, desiring that my heart would bow before Thee and my life would bring Thee honor. Amen.
