A Prayer for Wisdom and Discernment in Our Thoughts and Words
"¶ Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter." - Ecclesiastes 10:20

Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with reverence and awe, acknowledging Your sovereignty over all creation. Your Word reminds us in Ecclesiastes 10:20, "Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter." As we reflect on this profound verse, we seek to understand its deeper implications and to align our hearts and minds with Your Will.
Lord, we recognize that thoughts are powerful. They can shape our character, define our actions, and influence those around us. You know the struggles we face when we harbor ill thoughts towards our leaders, whether they be in our communities, nations, or even in our homes. Help us to cultivate a spirit of respect and honor, recognizing that all authority is established by You. Teach us to guard our thoughts, to replace any seeds of negativity or resentment with seeds of grace and understanding.
Father, we confess that it is easy to critique and blame others, especially those in positions of power, without considering the heavy burdens they bear. It is easy to speak in harsh terms about the rich, forgetting that wealth can be a tool for both good and harm. Help us to look beyond our frustrations and to acknowledge the complexities of leadership and wealth. Burn away any bitterness that may reside in our hearts, and grant us a spirit that seeks to uplift rather than tear down.
We pray for our leaders today – whether they be kings or leaders in our workplaces, communities, or families. Surround them with Your wisdom and strengthen them to lead with integrity and courage. May they be influenced by Your teachings, seeking justice and compassion in their decisions. Let our own voices be ones of encouragement, not condemnation, as we acknowledge their need for support and prayer. Help us to remember that those who lead are human, too, filled with struggles, hopes, and challenges like the rest of us.
Moreover, Lord, we are reminded that our words possess a ripple effect. Let us not fall into the trap of speaking ill in private, believing our criticisms are safe in the shadows. May we remember that “a bird of the air shall carry the voice” and that nothing we say in secret will remain hidden for long. Instill in us a sense of accountability for what we say, whether openly or in our private chambers. Convict our hearts when we stray into gossip or slander, reminding us that every word has the power to build up or tear down.
Father, give us the strength to embrace humility in our thoughts and actions. Grant us the discipline to reflect before we react, to think before we speak, and to speak words of life instead of death. Empower us to have constructive discussions, focused on finding solutions rather than merely airing grievances. Help us to be instruments of peace in a world that is all too quick to anger and to judge.
As we strive to embody the teachings of Your Word, may our lives reflect the love and grace You have shown us. Let our thoughts be aligned with Your ways, and our words be seasoned with kindness. Remind us daily that we are called to be a blessing, not a curse, in every area of our lives.
In Jesus’ name, we pray,
Amen.
