A Prayer for Wisdom and Humility
"¶ Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished." - Ecclesiastes 4:13

O Heavenly Father,
We come before You in reverence and awe, acknowledging Your sovereignty over all creation. As we pause in this moment, we are reminded of the profound wisdom found in Your Word, particularly in the verse from Ecclesiastes 4:13, which states, "Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished."
Lord, we seek understanding as we unpack these words. The contrast between a poor yet wise child and an old and foolish king speaks volumes about the value of wisdom over wealth, and the importance of receptiveness to correction over the arrogance that often accompanies power. In our lives, we witness too many examples of pride clouding reason, where those in positions of authority shut their ears to wise counsel.
Help us, O Lord, to embody the wisdom of the child the scripture describes. Grant us the humility to recognize that our material possessions do not define our worth or our wisdom. Teach us to be humble learners, willing to grow and to seek knowledge from any source You provide. May we never allow the trappings of success to drown out Your voice or the voices of those You place in our lives to guide us.
Father, in a world that often equates wealth with worth, remind us that earthly riches are temporary, but wisdom is eternal. Help us to value the lessons that come from experiences, both good and bad, and to understand that even in poverty, one can be rich in wisdom, understanding, and compassion. Illuminate our hearts so that we may recognize the riches of the Kingdom of Heaven, where the meek, the merciful, and those who seek righteousness shall be blessed.
Give us the courage to stand firm in truth and wisdom, even when it may not be popular. Help us to speak truth to power with grace and love, and instill in us the strength to remain humble all the days of our lives. Let us not grow complacent or resistant to further learning, even as our years accumulate. Protect us from becoming foolish in our old age, believing that we have arrived at a place where we no longer need to grow.
Lord, we also pray for those in leadership positions, be they kings, presidents, or managers. May Your grace touch their hearts to be open to the wisdom of those around them. Help them to see the value in the insight brought forth by those who may seem insignificant in the eyes of the world but hold deep understanding and wisdom. May they live in a manner that reflects the humility of the wise child and be open to the guidance that surrounds them.
As we engage in our daily interactions, help us to treat others with respect, recognizing that every person carries potential wisdom. Allow us to be active in listening, open in sharing, and encouraging in guiding one another towards growth. In our families, communities, and workplaces, may we uplift the voices of the wise children among us, acknowledging that true wisdom knows no age or status.
Father, we realize that wisdom can only come from You. Therefore, we ask for Your divine intervention in our pursuit of knowledge and understanding. May Your Holy Spirit guide our thoughts, inform our decisions, and shape our hearts toward truth and compassion. Help us to be agents of Your love and wisdom in a world that often prioritizes success over substance.
In conclusion, we thank You, Lord, for the lessons recorded in Your Holy Scriptures. May they continue to inspire us to be wise in our ways and humble in our hearts, always willing to be admonished and to learn. We ask this in the precious name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
