A Prayer for Rest and Renewal on the Sabbath
"And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning." - Exodus 16:23

Gracious and Almighty God,
As I bow before You today, I am filled with gratitude for Your manifold blessings and for the divine rhythm of life that You have established. In the busyness of our days, amidst the hustle and bustle of our lives, You, O Lord, remind us of the sacredness of rest — a holy ordinance affirming our need for both physical nourishment and spiritual rejuvenation. I come before You inspired by Your words in Exodus 16:23, which declares, "And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning."
Heavenly Father, how often I forget the value of the Sabbath! How often do I disregard Your invitation to pause and connect with You in deeper fellowship? Today, I earnestly seek to lay aside my anxieties, my tasks, and the incessant demands of life as I approach this moment of prayer. Embolden me with the understanding that You called the Sabbath holy — a day set apart for rest, reflection, worship, and communion. Just as You instructed the Israelites in the wilderness to prepare for rest, I too wish to prepare my heart and spirit to receive all that You have in store for me on this sacred day.
Lord, help me to appreciate the thoughtful provision You made for Your people in their time of need, providing manna from heaven to sustain them. You not only fed them physically but also taught them the importance of resting in You. I pray that I may learn from this divine lesson, recognizing that it is not just a cessation of work but an invitation to deepen my relationship with You, to recharge my spirit, and to refocus my life according to Your will.
As I contemplate the significance of the Sabbath, I ask that You guide my preparations today — to bake and seethe, as instructed. May my tasks be done with an attitude of worship, knowing that in my diligence, I am honoring You. I pray that my work today will reflect both my thankfulness for Your provision and my readiness to enjoy the rest You have ordained for me tomorrow.
Lord, I also seek to lay aside all that remains over until the morning. Teach me, O Father, to relinquish my cares and burdens, to put down my worries and anxiety. Help me to be mindful of the blessings I have, rather than the tasks yet undone. In laying up my concerns and labors until the next day, I commit them to You, believing that You will handle all that weighs heavily on my heart. Assure me of Your continuous presence and provision, that I need not carry these burdens alone.
In a world fraught with noise and distraction, I yearn for the peace that surpasses all understanding. I desire to enter into that sacred space You provide, a space where I can hear Your voice most clearly, where I can experience Your solace most fully. As I embrace the holy Sabbath, may I find rest not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally. Bring restoration to my weary soul and renew my mind with Your truth as I dwell in Your presence, seeking to know You more deeply.
Lastly, may my observance of the Sabbath not just be for my benefit alone but also a testament to others of Your goodness and grace. Let my life illuminate the beauty of resting in You, pointing others towards the refuge and strength found in Your loving arms.
In the precious name of Jesus, I pray, trusting in Your promises and holding firm to the peace that You offer us. Amen.

Exodus 16:23 - "And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning."
Exodus 16:23-30 - "He said to them, "This is what the Lord commanded: 'Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.'" So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. "Eat it today," Moses said, "because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find any of it on the ground today. Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any." Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none. Then the Lord said to Moses, "How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions? Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day; no one is to go out." So the people rested on the seventh day."
