A Prayer for Rest and Renewal

""For six years you may sow your land and gather in its produce. But during the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, so that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave, the beasts of the field may eat. In like manner you shall do with your vineyard and your olive grove. Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female servant and the stranger may be refreshed."" - Exodus 23:10-12

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before You today with humble hearts, acknowledging Your infinite wisdom and the perfect order that You have woven into the very fabric of creation. As we reflect upon the words found in Exodus 23:10-12, we are reminded of the sacred rhythm of work and rest that You have ordained for us. Your commandment, "For six years you may sow your land and gather in its produce. But during the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow..." speaks volumes about Your heart for not only our wellbeing but also for the wellbeing of the creation that You have entrusted to us.

Lord, we thank You for the blessing of labor, for the ability to sow and reap, to create and to cultivate. We recognize that every good and perfect gift comes from You, and that our harvest ultimately belongs to You. In our work, empower us to dedicate our efforts to You, that we may glorify Your name in all we do, whether it be in our fields, our jobs, or the daily tasks that enrich our lives. Guide us to be diligent stewards of the gifts You have given us, using them not only for our benefit, but for the benefit of those around us.

Yet, Father, as You instruct us to let the land rest in the seventh year, we ask that You help us to embrace rest in our own lives as well. In a world that often celebrates busyness, remind us that there is sacredness in stillness. "During the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow," You say, inviting us to relinquish the burden of constant productivity. May we find the courage to step back, to pause, and to breathe amidst our hectic schedules so that we, too, may rejuvenate just as the land does.

Lord, we are also reminded that this rest serves a purpose beyond our own renewal. It is a divine provision for the poor and the needy among us. Help us to recognize the needs of those around us, to be aware of the marginalized and the vulnerable within our communities. In light of the instruction, "so that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave, the beasts of the field may eat," we commit to being a source of generosity and compassion. May our moments of rest prompt us to think of ways we can share our abundance with others. Teach us to open our hearts and hands to those in need, that they may find sustenance in our overflow.

Furthermore, we understand that Your design extends to the rest You ordained for our animals: "Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, that your ox and your donkey may rest." Remind us, O Lord, of our responsibility to care for all Your creation. Help us to value the creatures and creation around us, treating them with kindness and gentleness as sentient beings deserving of rest and care.

As we reflect on the latter part of the verse, where You call for rest for our servants and the stranger, may we cultivate an atmosphere of inclusivity in our lives. Allow our homes and communities to be spaces where everyone, whether they be family, friends, or strangers, may find the respite that is so critically needed. May our Sabbath practices encourage friendship, community, and refreshment.

Heavenly Father, in our busyness, teach us patience. In our striving, instill within us a longing for Your peace. In our service, remind us of the importance of rest. And let this sacred rhythm guide our lives, producing a harvest not only of fruit but also of grace and love.

In the name of Jesus, our Sustainer and Restorer, we pray,

Amen.

Exodus 23:10-12 - "For six years you may sow your land and gather in its produce. But during the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, so that the poor of your people may eat of it and the beasts of the field may eat. You are to do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove. Six days you are to do your work, but on the seventh day you must cease, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your maidservant, as well as the foreign resident, may refresh themselves."
