A Prayer for Rest and Renewal
"Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed." - Exodus 23:12

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I am reminded of the sacred rhythm of work and rest that You established from the beginning of time. In the book of Exodus, Chapter 23, Verse 12, You commanded, "Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed." Lord, this divine instruction is not just a guideline for our physical labor but a profound reminder of our need for spiritual and emotional renewal.
I thank You, O God, for the gift of work, which You ordained for our hands and hearts. It is through labor that we provide for ourselves and our families, contributing to society and fulfilling our purpose. Help me to see my work as an extension of Your glory. Let every task, no matter how mundane, be viewed through the lens of service to You and others. Teach me to work heartily, as unto the Lord, knowing that my efforts are part of a greater plan.
Yet, I confess, Lord, that in this fast-paced world, I sometimes resist Your call to rest. I delve deeper into work, forgetting the importance of balance. I ask for your forgiveness for the times I have equated busyness with productivity and worth. In my zealousness to achieve or accumulate, I have neglected the sacred pause that You designed for rejuvenation.
I honor Your divine wisdom in commanding rest. I acknowledge that You created everything in six days and on the seventh, You rested. Not because You needed to, but to set an example for us, teaching us that rest is essential and sacred. Let me remember that rest is not a sign of weakness but an opportunity to reflect, recharge, and reconnect with You and the world around me.
Lord, I pray that as I follow Your command to dedicate one day to rest, You would fill that time with refreshment, joy, and peace. May I find delight in Your creation—be it a quiet moment meditating in nature, the laughter of family gathered around a meal, or the stillness found in worship. Help me to put aside distractions and the burdens of the week so that my focus can return to You, the source of my strength and joy.
May this time of rest serve not just to replenish my own weary spirit but also to consider the needs of others, as You reminded us. Let my rest be a time of consideration for "thine ox and thine ass”—the creatures that work alongside us—and a chance to extend grace to those around me, including the strangers, the friends, and the family members who may also be weary from their labors. Let me act with compassion and provide for those who may not have the means to recuperate as I do, encouraging them to rest and be refreshed in Your presence as well.
Lord, may Your Sabbath be a cornerstone of my week, a sanctuary of time where I can disconnect from worldly concerns and rededicate my spirit to You. Teach me to protect this sacred time and to invite others into it as well, fostering a community of rest, where Your love and grace can permeate our hearts.
Finally, as I carve out this time for rest according to Your command, I ask that You refresh my spirit so that I may return to my work with new vigor and an attitude aligned with Your will. May I remember that through resting, I am better equipped to serve, love, and fulfill the tasks and roles You have prepared for me.
In Jesus’ holy name, I pray,
Amen.
