A Prayer of Surrender: Casting Down Idols of the Heart
"Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?" - Ezekiel 14:3

O Sovereign Lord, in Your holiness, we come before You with humble hearts, acknowledging Your supremacy and our frailty. As we reflect on the profound truth of Your Word from Ezekiel 14:3, we recognize that we, like the people of Israel in times past, often set up idols in our hearts. We confess that at times we have allowed various distractions, desires, and ambitions to take precedence over our devotion to You. Thus, we gather today to seek Your presence, to unearth the idolatries that may be hiding in the shadows of our hearts, and to wholeheartedly surrender to You.
O God, You have spoken through Your faithful prophet Ezekiel, saying, "Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?" (KJV) Lord, we discern that these words are not merely historical; they resonate deeply within our lives today. We ask for Your Spirit to illuminate our hearts and reveal the idols that we may have unknowingly embraced—whether they be in the forms of materialism, success, relationships, personal ambitions, or any obsession that draws our attention away from You.
Father, we repent with sincere hearts. Help us to recognize the stumbling blocks of iniquity that we have placed before ourselves. Forgive us for our complacency, and for the times we sought Your guidance while harboring our idols. Forgive us, O Lord, for seeking You with divided hearts, while we clung to our own desires and cravings. Grant us the grace to turn away from these distractions and to fix our eyes solely upon You, our true and only God.
Lord, cleanse us and purify our hearts. Your Word teaches that the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. How we long to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, so that we may present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to You, which is our reasonable service. Help us to embrace the simplicity of seeking You above everything else. Draw us into an intimate relationship with You where our hearts are aligned completely to Your will, free from the encumbrances of earthly idols.
Father, we earnestly desire to be in a position where we can truly enjoin with You, that when we call upon You, we may hear from You. Teach us what it means to have a heart undivided, a heart that longs for Your presence above all else. Let Your voice be clearer than the enticements of this world. May the desires of our hearts be molded after Yours, so that what pleases You becomes our utmost desire.
O Lord, there may be times when we face trials, challenges, and uncertainties, and sometimes we may be tempted to turn towards the idols we have clung to as a source of comfort. In those moments, remind us of the futility of placing our trust in that which cannot save. For every stumbling block we encounter, let us place our faith in You and Your promises instead. May we tune our hearts to seek You in every situation, knowing that You alone are our Refuge, our Strength, our Provider, and our Healer.
As we submit our minds and hearts to You, we ask that You lead us to make choices that glorify Your name. Guide us away from the entanglements of worldly ambitions and help us to pursue righteousness and truth in our everyday lives. May our prayers be one with the very pulse of Your heart, and our lives a testimony to Your grace and love.
We surrender every idol, every distraction, and every stumbling block, willingly laying them at Your feet. Fill us with a deep yearning for Your presence, so that our hearts will be wholly devoted to You. We ask this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
