A Prayer for Deliverance from Desolation
"Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria." - Ezekiel 23:33

O Sovereign Lord, the Almighty God, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, I come before You with reverence and humility, acknowledging the weight of the words spoken through Your prophet, Ezekiel. As Your child, I am reminded of the gravity expressed in Ezekiel 23:33, which says, “Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria.” Lord, I stand here today in recognition of the depth of meaning contained within this verse, seeking Your guidance and healing for those who are ensnared by the binding effects of sin and disobedience.
Dear Father, the imagery of drunkenness is one that speaks to loss of control, to the staggering consequences of choices made in ignorance or rebellion against Your divine will. We see in our lives and in the world around us how many are consumed by the intoxicating effects of temptation and vice. They are lost in a fog of confusion, grief, and sorrow, just as Your word describes. My heart aches for these souls, entangled in deceit, drawn into the depths of their sorrow, unaware of the path that leads to destruction.
O Lord, we cry out for deliverance. We ask that You pour Your Spirit of wisdom and understanding upon those walking in darkness, that their eyes may be opened to the truth of their circumstances. Help them to see that they are drinking from the cup of astonishment, unaware of the desolation that lies ahead if they do not turn from their ways. Let Your love be a beacon of hope to them as they stumble through this terrifying wilderness.
Father, I also recognize the reference to “thy sister Samaria” in this verse, an evocation of judgment and a call to remember that apart from You, there is no salvation. Samaria was filled with corruption, idolatry, and ultimately faced destruction because of her unfaithfulness to You. Likewise, many in our society today are worshipping false idols and placing their trust in the fleeting comforts of this world. As we see the echoes of Samaria in our world, we ask You, dear Lord, to stir our hearts to action, to be messengers of Your grace and truth in a way that draws people away from the desolation that follows sin.
I pray for anyone reading this prayer who is struggling with addiction, grief, or the overwhelming pain that comes from living apart from Your presence. I ask, in the mighty name of Jesus, for a refreshing flood of Your love to wash over them. Replace their drunkenness with a clarity of mind, dispelling the sorrow that clouds their hearts. Let them find solace in You, experiencing the joy and peace that only comes from an intimate relationship with the Savior.
Lord, we long for revival in our hearts, in our families, and in our communities. Turn our hearts back to You, O God of mercy. Cleanse us from the familiarity of sorrow and desolation that can sometimes feel all-consuming. Grant us the fortitude to confront our shortcomings and the courage to reach out to those who are suffering.
In the face of temptation and self-destruction, may we turn to You for strength, reminding ourselves and each other that we do not have to drink from the cup of our sister Samaria. Instead, let us lift our cups to You, the cup of salvation, that overflows with Your goodness and grace. May our lives be a testimony of Your restorative power, leading others to find hope and healing in You.
I thank You, Father, for hearing my prayer. I trust in Your promise of redemption. Let us not only be convicts of this truth but also bearers of it into the world around us. In the powerful name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.
