A Prayer for Unity and Restoration

"The children of Hagab, the children of Shalmai, the children of Hanan," - Ezra 2:46

"The children of Hagab, the children of Shalmai, the children of Hanan," - Ezra 2:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

As we come before You in prayer, we are reminded of the words found in Your holy Scriptures, specifically Ezra 2:46, which speaks of the children of Hagab, the children of Shalmai, and the children of Hanan. O Lord, while this verse mentions specific names, it also represents the collective struggle and triumph of Your people as they return to their roots, to their land, and to their covenant relationship with You. We look to You today not just as individuals, but as a community that seeks You, that yearns for restoration and unity.

Lord, we recognize that just as the children of Hagab had a place in the genealogy of Your people, each of us also has a unique role in Your plan. We may be from varying backgrounds and experiences, but under Your grace, we are woven together into one body. Help us to see beyond our differences and focus on what binds us together — our faith in You and our desire to serve Your kingdom.

As we reflect upon these names, we ask for the spirit of Hagab, Shalmai, and Hanan to embody our collective efforts today. Like Hagab, may we be known as those who are devoted to the work of restoring Your land. Grant strength and perseverance to fulfill our tasks, whether they be in our personal lives, our communities, or in the church. Help us to learn the value of laboring diligently in Your vineyard, knowing that every effort contributes to the greater aim of glorifying You.

With the spirit of Shalmai, help us cultivate a heart of humility and service toward others. We remember that Shalmai’s children returned with purpose, and they were part of a larger mission. May we not lose sight of our shared mission as we live our lives day by day. Open our eyes to the needs of those around us and move us to action — to offer help, to share love, and to bring kindness to those who are struggling. Let us be a church that serves with sincerity and grace.

Then, in the essence of Hanan, may we emulate compassion and mercy. Hanan means ‘gracious’ and it brings to mind the love and grace You have so freely given us. As we work towards unity, let us remember to extend grace towards one another. Help us to forgive quickly and to embody the love that You showed us through Jesus Christ. May we be seed planters of kindness, nurturing the soil of our relationships so that they might blossom into a community that reflects Your love.

Father, as we seek to become united, we pray against division. We understand that the journey is often marked by challenges and oppositions, as faced by Your people in those days. Yet, remind us that our strength comes from You. Encourage us to lean on one another, to build each other up, and to work through our differences with patience and understanding.

Lord, whenever we feel overwhelmed, help us to remember Your promise of presence. As the children of Israel returned to their homeland, they were reminded that it was You who led them. Remind us today that You are with us in our individual walks and as a community. May we always seek Your guidance and wisdom, trusting in the plans You have for us.

In bringing our prayer to a close, we declare that we desire to honor Your name in all we do. We pray that like the children of Hagab, Shalmai, and Hanan, we may be counted among those who return to Your work with hearts full of hope and hands ready to serve. Let our legacy be one of faithfulness, unity, and love.

We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
