A Prayer for Divine Guidance and Understanding
"And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen;" - Ezra 8:18

O Mighty and Sovereign Lord,
As I come before You today, I reflect upon the wonderful truth encapsulated in Ezra 8:18, where it is said, “And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen.” I stand in awe of Your provision and guidance in our lives—as it was in the days of Ezra, so it is now. Your hand rests upon us, guiding our paths and providing for our needs.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your good hand that ever rests upon us, for without it, we would surely falter. You are the giver of wisdom and understanding, and just as You brought forth Sherebiah and his kin, I ask that You would raise up wise leaders and mentors in my life and the lives of those around me. Teach us to recognize those sent by You, those endowed with wisdom and discernment that can help lead and guide us according to Your will.
Lord, I earnestly pray for a spirit of discernment in my own heart—a discernment that enables me to recognize the ‘men of understanding’ You bring my way. Help me to be receptive to guidance and to seek wise counsel in times of decision-making. May I, like Ezra, understand the necessity of surrounding myself with those who know You and Your statutes deeply, just as Sherebiah and his sons knew Your ways.
O Father, I am aware that seeking understanding requires humility. I ask You to cultivate a humble heart within me, willing to listen to Your voice and the voices of those whom You have chosen to enlighten me. May I not lean on my own understanding, but lean upon Your everlasting Word, which is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
In times of trial and uncertainty, when I feel lost and lack direction, may I remember to look for Your hand upon my life. Simply knowing that You are present and that Your good hand is guiding me helps me to navigate the trials I face with grace and strength. Help me to trust that You are orchestrating all things for my good and Your glory—just as You orchestrated events for Ezra and the returning exiles.
I also pray for those who seek understanding—the youth who are forming their paths, the seekers who wander in search of truth, and those who are burdened by the weight of decision-making. Lord, may Your good hand be upon them as You guide their hearts toward wisdom and knowledge. Bring them Godly influencers, mentors, and friends who reflect Your truth and light in their lives, just as You did in the time of Ezra.
In our churches, families, and communities, I pray for a revival of wisdom—raise up among us men and women of understanding who can teach us the ways of righteousness. Remove the scales from our eyes that prevent us from seeing the value in seeking counsel and wisdom from those who have walked before us in faith.
Lastly, I thank You, Lord, for the promise of Your guidance and the assurance that Your good hand is upon us. I am grateful for every ‘Sherebiah’ that You have brought into my life—those who have equipped me to grow in faith and understanding. May I, in turn, be a vessel for Your good work in the lives of others, sharing the wisdom I receive and upholding them in prayer.
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and Friend, I pray. Amen.
