A Prayer for Brotherhood and Compassion

"Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body." - Hebrews 13:1-3

"Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body." - Hebrews 13:{verse.verse_number}

Heavenly Father,

As I come before You this day, I am reminded of the profound call to love that is encapsulated in the words of Hebrews 13:1-3, "Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body." What a powerful Scripture that serves as both a reminder and a commandment to treat one another with love and compassion.

Lord, I ask that You instill within my heart a genuine love for my brothers and sisters in Christ, and for every person I encounter. Let this brotherly love be ever-present and flowing, not only when it is convenient or easy, but especially through moments of trial and uncertainty. May I recognize that each person before me is created in Your image, deserving of kindness, respect, and grace.

Help me to see their needs and to act on them. Teach me to entertain strangers, to welcome those who are different from me, and to do so without prejudice or hesitation. For in doing so, as Your Word reminds me, I may unknowingly encounter angels. Give me eyes to see beyond the surface and a heart that beats with the rhythm of Your compassion, so that I may embrace those whom society often overlooks or disregards.

Lord, I repent for the times I have moved past those in need, wrapped up in my own world, busy with my own concerns. Forgive me when I have neglected to extend a hand or offer a word of encouragement to someone who is lost or broken. Empower me to embody Your kindness to those who are downtrodden, sick, or imprisoned. May I remember them as if I were alongside them, sharing in their burdens, and may my spirit resonate with their pain.

Just as You reached out to the marginalized and those who suffered during Your time on earth, teach me to be an agent of love and a voice of hope. Remind me that there is no separation between my suffering and that of others; we are all part of the same body. Help me to stand in solidarity with those who are ‘in bonds’—whether those bonds are literal, spiritual, or emotional. May I be a source of strength and support, just as Jesus was to those in need.

Guide me to find ways to serve those who suffer adversity, not only by giving to charitable causes but by investing my time, energy, and love into their lives. Help me to carry their burdens alongside them, to speak words of comfort, and to initiate acts of kindness that may lift them from despair and instill them with hope.

As I navigate through this world, Lord, may my heart remain open and generous, responsive to Your leading. Let me be a reflection of Your love, radiating warmth and compassion that others may know they are valued and seen. Let them experience Your grace through my actions, so they may be drawn closer to You.

In all things, I surrender my own will to Yours, trusting that You have called me for this purpose: to love and serve. May my life be a living tribute to the scriptures You have given us, where brotherly love and compassion reign over all. Let us pray in unison, gathering in the spirit of unity and kindness, remembering that our love for one another signifies our love for You.

In Jesus’ name, I pray,

Amen.
