“Swallowed Up in Victory: A Prayer on Isaiah 25:8”
"He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it." - Isaiah 25:8

Lord GOD Almighty,
I come before Thee with reverence and hope, anchoring my heart in Thy sure promise. Thy Word declares, “He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.” I hold fast to what Thou hast spoken, for Thy voice is truth, and Thy counsel shall stand. Where my faith trembles, strengthen it; where my mind grows weary, steady it with Thy eternal Word.
O Lord, I confess that death often feels near—not only in the passing of loved ones, but in the many shadows of loss, fear, disappointment, sickness, and sorrow that visit this world. Yet Thou hast said, “He will swallow up death in victory.” Let that victory rise in my soul like morning light. Teach me to see that death is not the final word over those who belong to Thee. When I feel the sting of grief, when I feel the weight of endings and the ache of absence, remind me that Thy promise is not fragile. It is strong, settled, and certain. Help me to live with a holy courage that does not deny pain, but refuses despair.
Lord GOD, Thou also hast spoken, “the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces.” I bring Thee my tears—those I have wept in secret, those I have tried to hide, those that return uninvited in the quiet hours. I bring Thee the tears of my family, my friends, my community, and all who mourn across the earth. Look upon the brokenhearted, the oppressed, the lonely, and the forgotten. Let the tenderness of Thy hand be near. Wipe away tears born from injustice, tears born from betrayal, tears born from longing, tears born from regret, tears born from fear. Teach me to trust that Thou dost not merely observe sorrow from afar, but dost draw near with compassion that cannot fail.
Father, I ask Thee to make me an instrument of Thy comfort. Where someone’s face is wet with sorrow, grant me words seasoned with grace and a presence that brings peace. Keep me from shallow answers and hurried judgments. Give me patience to sit with those who grieve, and humility to love without needing to fix what only Thou canst heal. Help me to carry one another’s burdens in sincerity, and to point hurting hearts to Thee—not as a distant idea, but as the living Lord GOD who wipes away tears.
And Lord, Thy Word continues: “and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth.” I confess that I have felt rebuke and shame—sometimes from others, sometimes from my own thoughts, sometimes from memories that accuse me. I ask Thee to take away the reproach that clings like a garment. Remove every false label, every mocking voice, every condemnation that is not of Thee. Purify Thy people, defend Thy people, restore Thy people. Let the rebuke that rises against the faithful be silenced by Thy righteousness and answered by Thy faithfulness. Teach me to walk in holiness, not to earn Thy promise, but to honor Thy Name.
Lord, let this promise shape the way I face today. When I see death at work in the world, let me remember, “He will swallow up death in victory.” When I feel the ache of tears, let me remember, “the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces.” When I encounter scorn against Thy people, let me remember, “the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth.” And when doubts whisper that hope is too much to hold, let me answer with the last words of the verse: “for the LORD hath spoken it.”
Thou hast spoken, and therefore I will trust. Thou hast spoken, and therefore I will wait. Thou hast spoken, and therefore I will worship. Establish my heart in Thy promise until the day that faith becomes sight, sorrow gives way to joy, and Thy victory is fully revealed.
In Thy holy and mighty Name, I pray. Amen.
