A Prayer for Awakening from False Security

"Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:" - Isaiah 28:15

"Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:" - Isaiah 28:{verse.verse_number}

O Sovereign Lord,

we come before You today with heavy hearts and humble spirits, acknowledging the profound weight of Isaiah 28:15. In this scripture, You reveal to us the danger of placing our trust in lies and agreements with death. We confess that as a people, we have often turned our eyes away from Your truth, seeking refuge in false promises and empty agreements.

Gracious Father, Your Word speaks of a covenant with death and an agreement with hell. We recognize that these are not mere abstractions; they represent the choices we make, the paths we walk, and the ideologies we embrace. In our pursuit of comfort and reassurance, how frequently have we sought to negotiate with our fears instead of confronting them with Your light? Forgive us for the times we have convinced ourselves that we can hide under the falsehoods of this world. Forgive us for our complacency, for our reluctance to walk in Your ways when the path seems difficult or fraught with trials.

We acknowledge that we have sometimes mistaken the illusion of safety for the reality of Your protection. As we delve deeper into this verse, we see the folly of constructing a refuge from lies, believing they can shield us from the inevitable consequences of our choices. Help us to recognize the truth that will set us free, for Your Word is truth.

Lord, we ask for Your Holy Spirit to illuminate our understanding. Help us to discern the lies that we have accepted as truth. Open our eyes to see how these deceptions have woven themselves into our lives, leading us astray from the path You have laid before us. Let us not be like those who are lulled into a false sense of security, thinking that danger shall pass us by when we are ensnared in our own deceptions. Let us not feel invincible in our agreements with what is contrary to Your will!

Teach us, O God, to deal with the reality of sin, death, and hell, not as inevitable companions in our journey but as foes defeated by the blood of Jesus at the cross. Help us to proclaim the victory that is ours in Christ, reminding ourselves and others that we have not made a covenant with death; rather, we have the eternal life found in You.

We pray for a revival of truth in our hearts and in our communities. We ask that You would raise up leaders and voices who boldly declare Your Word without fear of backlash, who will expose falsehoods and shine the light of Your truth into dark places. May we be a people who no longer tolerate the deceptive whispers that tell us we can secure our destiny outside of Your grace and mercy.

Lord, allow Your Word to permeate our lives so that we may stand firm in the floods of overwhelming pressure that come our way. When the overflowing scourge passes through, may we confidently hold fast to the rock of our salvation, knowing that we are sheltered within Your love and promises. We trust that even when the tempest rages, we can find peace in You alone, for You are our refuge and fortress.

And as we seek Your truth, grant us the grace to share our journey with others—may our lives reflect the light of Your truth and may we introduce others to the safety found in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Help us to nurture a community that lifts one another up in hope and faith, encouraging substantive conversations about accountability and growth in faith.

We pray all of this in the precious name of our Savior, who is the way, the truth, and the life. Amen.
