Come Ye to the Waters: A Prayer of Thirst, Welcome, and Grace

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price." - Isaiah 55:1

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price." - Isaiah 55:{verse.verse_number}

Father in heaven, Holy and gracious God, I come before Thee with a needy heart, confessing that my soul often knows what it means to thirst. I acknowledge that no created thing can finally satisfy the deep hunger within me, and that my striving, my plans, my efforts, and my possessions cannot purchase peace for my conscience or life for my spirit. Thou alone art the Fountain of living waters, and I come to Thee in reverence and dependence.

Thy Word calls to me with mercy and invitation: “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” Lord, I hear this call, and I confess that I have often tried to quiet my thirst with lesser waters—broken cisterns that hold no water. Forgive me for seeking satisfaction in the praise of people, in the comfort of temporary pleasures, in anxious control, or in the pride of self-sufficiency. Forgive me for measuring my worth by what I can earn, achieve, or prove, as though I could purchase what only grace can give.

Yet Thou hast spoken plainly and tenderly: “every one that thirsteth.” I thank Thee that Thy invitation is not reserved for the strong, the wealthy, the deserving, or the outwardly impressive, but for the thirsty—those who know their need. I bring Thee my dryness, my fatigue, my secret sins, my fears about tomorrow, and my sorrow for what I cannot change. I bring Thee my emptiness and ask Thee to meet me here, not because I have riches to offer, but because Thou art rich in mercy.

Thou hast also said, “he that hath no money; come ye.” Lord, I confess that spiritually I have nothing to buy what I most need. I cannot purchase cleansing, I cannot afford righteousness, I cannot trade good intentions for a new heart. I lay down the illusion that I can repay Thee. I renounce the hidden bargains I have tried to make—thinking I must be flawless before I approach, thinking I must fix myself before I come near, thinking I must earn the right to be heard. Teach me to come as Thy Word commands: to come empty, to come trusting, to come humbly.

Thou callest me still: “come ye, buy, and eat.” Lord, feed me with what strengthens the inward man. Let my faith be nourished, let my love be purified, let my hope be renewed. Give me an appetite for Thee and for Thy truth. Remove from me a taste for what corrupts and a craving for what cannot sustain. Set my heart on that which is good, and let me find joy in what is holy. Teach me to receive, not merely to know; to partake, not merely to observe; to be satisfied in Thee, not merely informed about Thee.

And Thou sayest again, “yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” O Lord, I praise Thee for such undeserved kindness. Wine and milk speak to me of abundance, gladness, comfort, and strength—gifts not rationed by my merit, not limited by my resources, not withheld until I prove myself. Thou art the Giver, and Thy giving is free. Let the gladness of Thy salvation replace my heaviness. Let the comfort of Thy presence quiet my restless thoughts. Let the strength Thou supplyest uphold me when I feel weak, and let the sweetness of Thy fellowship make bitterness lose its hold.

Lord, make me a person who comes. When I am tempted to run from Thee in shame, draw me by Thy love. When I am tempted to delay obedience, remind me of Thy open invitation. When I am tempted to boast in myself, teach me to remember that it is “without money and without price.” Keep me near the waters. Keep my heart tender. Keep my hands open. Let gratitude rise in me daily, not as a passing feeling, but as a steady worship.

And Father, let this invitation extend through me to others. Make me gentle toward the thirsty, patient with the struggling, and generous toward those who feel they have nothing. Help me to speak hope, to offer prayer, to show kindness, and to point the weary to Thee. Let my life testify that Thou dost not turn away the needy, but Thou dost welcome them.

I come, Lord. I come to the waters. I come to receive what I could never earn. Satisfy my soul in Thy mercy, and teach me to live as one who has been freely given grace. I pray these things with trust and reverence, according to Thy Word: “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” Amen.
