A Prayer for Purity of Heart and Eyes
"But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it." - Jeremiah 22:17

O Heavenly Father,
We come before You today with hearts heavy, reflecting on the profound words found in Jeremiah 22:17: "But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it." Lord, these words resonate deeply within us, for they reveal the dangers of a heart led astray by greed and the insatiable desires of this world.
Father, as we meditate on this scripture, we recognize the need for Your divine help to purify our eyes and hearts. We acknowledge that too often, we fall into the trap of seeking satisfaction in earthly possessions and status, neglecting the justice and compassion that You command us to pursue. Lord, we ask for forgiveness for the moments when our vision has been clouded by selfish ambition and when our hearts have sought after that which displaces You from our lives.
In a world that constantly pressures us to prioritize wealth and power, help us, Lord, to instead seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness. Teach us to desire not the fleeting pleasures of material gain, but the eternal treasures that come from living according to Your will. Help us to be content with what we have, knowing that true abundance comes from knowing You and being in relationship with You.
Lord, we also cry out against the injustice and violence that exist in our world today. We pray fervently for those who, like the innocent mentioned in Jeremiah, suffer from oppression and violence. Guide us to be instruments of Your peace, to stand up for the marginalized, and to speak out against the injustices that plague our communities. May we rejoice in the knowledge that You are a God of justice, and may our hearts align with Yours, yearning for a world where every person is treated with dignity and respect.
Father, help us to examine our hearts regularly, to discern any covetousness that may linger within us, rooting it out before it takes hold and leads us away from You. Remind us that every good and perfect gift comes from You, and let us be grateful stewards of Your blessings. When the temptation arises to pursue things that do not glorify You, grant us the strength to resist and to turn our hearts towards acts of love and kindness instead.
Lord, in our desire for more, let us not forget those who have less. Instill in us a spirit of generosity that overflows into acts of service. May our eyes be opened to see the needs around us, and may our hearts be moved to respond with compassion and grace. Let us refrain from violence in thoughts, words, and deeds, choosing instead the gentle path of understanding, mercy, and love.
And, O Lord, we pray for Your healing upon the brokenness in our communities. Where there is violence, we ask for Your peace. Where there is oppression, we plead for Your justice. Where there is covetousness, may Your love pour in to fill those voids. Let our lives reflect Your goodness and may our actions resonate with Your truth.
As we navigate this journey of life, keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Let Him be the center of our longing and desire. May our hearts be always aligned with Your purpose for our lives, and may we walk humbly, seeking to love mercy and to act justly in all that we do.
In Jesus’ name, we humbly pray,
Amen.
