A Prayer for Humility and Dependence on God
"¶ For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together." - Jeremiah 48:7

O Sovereign Lord, Creator of Heaven and Earth,
We come before You today, our hearts united in humility and reverence, seeking Your face. As we ponder the words from Jeremiah 48:7, we are reminded of the dangers of misplaced trust. The passage declares, "For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together." Lord, we recognize that these words speak profoundly to our human condition; they echo a warning, a timeless truth that reverberates through the ages.
Oh King of Ages, forgive us for the moments we have chosen self-reliance over reliance on You. Forgive us for the times we have sought to prop ourselves up with our own achievements, taking pride in our possessions and our status rather than leaning entirely on Your grace and provision. We acknowledge the comfort that wealth and success can bring, yet we also confess how easily our hearts can become ensnared by them, trusting in the gifts rather than the Giver.
Lord, let us remember the fate of Moab, who trusted in the might of Chemosh, their god. It resulted in their captivity and loss. Help us to see that no matter how fortified by our own strength we feel, we are always vulnerable without Your guiding hand. In our own lives, all too often, we can fall into similar patterns, investing our hearts into the transient things of this world.
Teach us, O God, to redirect our reliance from the fruits of our labor to the richness of Your eternal glory. Let our hearts be anchored in the truth that our worth and purpose stem from You alone. We repent of idolizing our work, finances, and status, realizing that they do not define us nor secure our salvation.
We acknowledge that You are the One who provides – the One who knows our needs before we even ask. May we be reminded daily that it is through Your grace and mercy that we stand firm. Help us to remember the apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 4:19, "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." Let this truth penetrate deeply into our spirits, challenging any belief that leads us to pride and independence from You.
Lord, we pray for protection from the spirits of pride and complacency that lurk in the shadows of our achievements. Guard our hearts against thinking that our efforts alone can secure our future or our standing in Your Kingdom. Give us the wisdom to seek Your face continually, allowing us to be true stewards of the talents You have given us, using them solely for Your glory and not for our own gain.
Help us to cultivate a spirit of humility, the essence of discipleship, where we remember that we are but vessels in Your great plan. May we seek first Your Kingdom and righteousness, leaning on Your understanding and not our own, that all else may fall into place according to Your divine purpose for our lives.
In the midst of trials, when doubt arises, strengthen our faith. Remind us that true security is found in dwelling within Your presence, not throne-made altars of earthly strength. Let the power of the Holy Spirit guide us, igniting a passion to honor You above all else.
As we go forth in this journey of life, let our lives reflect the nature of Christ – a life surrendered, seeking Servanthood, filled with love, mercy, and grace. May we shine as lights, drawing others not to ourselves but to You, our Source of hope and salvation.
In Your mighty name, we pray, Amen.
