A Prayer for the Wealthy but Uncaring Nation
"Arise, get you up unto the wealthy nation, that dwelleth without care, saith the LORD, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone." - Jeremiah 49:31

O Lord God Almighty,
As we come before You today, we pause in reverence, knowing that Your wisdom and understanding far exceed our own. We reflect on the words that You spoke through Your prophet Jeremiah: "Arise, get you up unto the wealthy nation, that dwelleth without care, saith the LORD, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone" (Jeremiah 49:31, KJV). This verse stirs our hearts, drawing us to contemplate the condition of nations and peoples who find themselves ensconced in material abundance while neglecting the care and compassion that you command.
Gracious Father, we lift up nations that have prospered and become wealthy by the gifts and resources You have bestowed. Yet, despite their wealth, they dwell without care, often blinded by their material gains. They erect towers of riches but neglect the very foundations of humanity—love, compassion, and community. Lord, awaken them from their slumber!
We pray that they might hear Your call, to 'arise' and 'get up.' May they recognize the urgency of turning from their self-centered pursuits and begin to invest in the wellbeing of their neighbors, the alien, the orphan, the widow, and the downtrodden among their midst. Let not their wealth be a source of pride, but rather a means by which they can extend Your mercy and grace to a broken world.
Almighty God, it is easy for a nation to build walls—both physical and metaphorical. You speak of a nation that has neither gates nor bars, which dwells alone. We see this in our world today—the isolation that wealth can foster. Many nations find comfort in their affluence, thinking they are safe from the needs and the wounds of others. We ask that you soften their hearts, dismantle the barriers that keep them separate, and remind them of their duty to love their neighbor as themselves.
Lord, we acknowledge that the carelessness that Jeremiah speaks of can manifest as indifference to injustice, apathy towards suffering, and neglect for stewardship of Your creation. We pray for a divine shift in mindset—a revival of hearts that are willing to serve rather than to be served. Let their prosperity not be a fortress but a foundation for outreach and service.
As Your people, we seek wisdom and guidance to respond to this call. Empower us as individuals, as communities, and as nations to reach out and act with understanding and compassion. May we be the hands and feet of Christ in a world that so desperately needs to feel Your love. Give us the courage to confront discomfort and the grace to lead with love.
We also pray for those who suffer due to the negligence of the wealthy. The marginalized, the broken, and the unheard—all those who cry out for justice and mercy. Lord, may their voices be amplified, reaching the ears of those in power. Stir the hearts of the wealthy to hear these cries, and embolden them to respond with generosity and humility.
In this, O Lord, we ask for Your blessings—bless those who have much, not that they may hoard but that they may share. Bless us with a renewed vision that transcends borders and barriers, bringing us together in a spirit of unity and purpose.
We long for a world where the wealthy do not dwell without care, but with deep compassion and commitment to uplift those around them. May the words of Jeremiah awaken a fresh sense of responsibility to You and to one another. Let it be said of us, as Your people, that we are a nation of mercy, a beacon of hope in a darkened world.
In closing, we rely on Your strength, trusting in Your promise to go before us as we step forward in faith. May we all be instruments of Your peace and channels of Your grace. We ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
