A Prayer for Divine Wisdom and Counsel
"¶ Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?" - Jeremiah 49:7

O Sovereign Lord, Creator of the heavens and the earth, I come before You today to humble myself and seek Your presence, recognizing Your sovereignty and the depth of Your wisdom. In the face of trials, I find solace in Your word, and today I meditate on the solemn words recorded in Jeremiah 49:7, which declare, "Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?" Lord, I bring before You the pressing concerns of my heart and the longing for wisdom, understanding that true wisdom only comes from You.
Almighty God, You are the source of all wisdom and knowledge. Your understanding is beyond measure, and your counsel is perfect. As I reflect on the question posed in Jeremiah, I am reminded of the world’s pursuit of wisdom, which often leads to confusion and folly. I see the struggles that so many face today, similar to those faced by the people of Edom, who were known as wise men. Their wisdom, which they once relied upon, seemed to fade away as they turned away from You, their Creator.
Lord, in our modern day, I observe the societies around us, filled with voices of counsel that lack the foundation of Your truth. I see many who, like the Edomites, may think they are wise, but their wisdom has become distorted by pride and arrogance. Help us, O God, to recognize that true wisdom, sound judgment, and effective counsel stem from knowing You intimately and walking in Your ways. I pray that as individuals and communities, we would not rely on our own understanding but rather seek Your face in earnest.
Heavenly Father, I ask that You raise up godly leaders who will impart wisdom and understanding grounded in Your Word. May they be filled with the Spirit of knowledge and lead us in truth rather than the empty philosophies of our time. Help us to reject any counsel that is contrary to Your commandments, and nurture a heart that seeks guidance from the Spirit in all aspects of life. Let us not become like Teman, a place once renowned for wisdom but whose counsel became foolishness apart from Your divine influence.
As I kneel before You, I acknowledge my own limitations and the foolish areas of my life where I have sought wisdom from sources that do not please You. Forgive me, Lord, for the times I have relied on my own understanding rather than trusting in Your guidance. I ask for renewal of my mind and clarity of thought, that I may pursue wisdom that honors You.
Teach me, O Lord, to respond to life’s challenges with prudence and discernment. When faced with critical decisions, help me to pause, pray, and seek input from wise counsel rooted in You. May I approach each situation with a heart that desires to reflect Your glory and truth. Remind me that wisdom is not simply about acquiring knowledge, but about applying understanding with grace and love.
As I consider the fate of Edom, I am reminded that wisdom can vanish, but Your promises endure forever. Help me to remain steadfast in my commitment to seek You above all else. May Your words dwell richly in my heart and be a lamp unto my feet.
In this time of prayer, I lift my voice for those who feel lost in their pursuit of wisdom, those who are struggling to find counsel that leads to life. May Your light shine upon them, guiding them back to the right path. I thank You, Lord, for the assurance that as I seek You with all my heart, I will find You and the wisdom that comes only from You.
In the name of Jesus Christ, the embodiment of wisdom from above, I pray.
Amen.
