A Prayer for Reverent Readiness Before the Great and Terrible Day of the LORD
"The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come." - Joel 2:31

Most Holy and Righteous LORD God Almighty,
We come before Thee with trembling awe and humble hearts, acknowledging that Thou art God alone—eternal in power, perfect in holiness, and faithful in all Thy words. We bow in reverence before the majesty of Thy counsel and the certainty of Thy judgments. Thou hast spoken, and none can annul it. Thou hast warned, and none should treat it lightly. We confess that we are but dust and ashes, and yet Thou hast made a way for sinners to seek Thy face.
Lord, we set our hearts upon Thy Word, and we remember what is written in the King James Version: “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.” We receive this verse not as a distant saying, but as a holy trumpet that calls us to wakefulness, repentance, and steadfast faith. Teach us to fear Thy name with a clean fear—a fear that leads not to despair, but to reverence, obedience, and sincere worship.
O LORD, we confess that we often live as though time were endless and judgment were far away. Forgive us for dullness of spirit. Forgive us for making peace with sin, for entertaining what grieves Thy Spirit, and for excusing what Thy Word condemns. Forgive us for prayerlessness and for neglect of Scripture. Forgive us for trusting in our own understanding, for leaning on our own strength, and for seeking comfort without holiness. Break every hardened place in our hearts. Take away the stony heart, and grant us a heart that trembles at Thy Word.
Father, when Thy Word declares that “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood,” we are reminded that all creation is subject to Thee, and that the lights we take for granted are not our gods, but Thy servants. Thou rulest the heavens and the earth. If the sun is darkened, it is because Thou hast appointed it; if the moon appears as blood, it is because Thou hast commanded it. Let these signs awaken in us a sober understanding that human pride is vain and the world’s security is fragile. Deliver us from false peace and careless living.
Yet, LORD, in the midst of these warnings, draw us close to Thy heart. Teach us to seek Thee while Thou mayest be found, and to call upon Thee while Thou art near. Grant us the grace of true repentance—deep, honest, and ongoing. Let our repentance be more than words; let it be a turning of the whole life toward Thee. Purify our thoughts, restrain our tongues, and sanctify our desires. Make us quick to confess and quick to forgive, quick to obey and slow to sin.
Prepare us for “the great and the terrible day of the LORD.” Prepare our homes, our churches, and our secret places. Let the fear of God return to us—not a fear that hides from Thee, but a fear that runs to Thee. Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Keep us from being swallowed by distractions, and set our affection on things above. Make us steady in faith when others are shaken; make us gentle in spirit when others are harsh; make us steadfast in truth when others compromise.
LORD, we intercede for those who do not consider Thee—those who mock Thy warnings, those who trust in their own righteousness, those who think they have no need of mercy. Open blind eyes and unstop deaf ears. Turn hearts of stone into hearts that can weep, pray, and believe. Raise up faithful witnesses in this generation—men and women who will speak Thy truth with love, courage, and purity. Let our lives proclaim that Thou art real, that Thy Word is sure, and that Thy salvation is precious.
When fear rises within us at the thought of darkness and judgment, anchor us in Thy character: Thou art just, and Thou art merciful; Thou art holy, and Thou art good. Teach us to watch and pray. Teach us to live ready, not in panic, but in faithfulness—serving Thee with clean hands and a pure heart. Let our worship be sincere. Let our fellowship be marked by love. Let our repentance be evident in changed lives. And let our hope be firm, because Thou art the LORD.
We ask that in the face of the words, “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come,” Thou wouldst make us a people who are not asleep, but awake; not careless, but consecrated; not proud, but broken and restored. Keep us under the shadow of Thy wings, and lead us in the paths of righteousness for Thy name’s sake.
To Thee be glory, honor, and dominion, world without end.
Amen.
