A Prayer for Distance and Proximity: Reflecting on John 11:18
"Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:" - John 11:18

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I am reminded of the profound truths woven into the fabric of Your Word. In John 11:18, it is written, "Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off." This simple yet powerful statement invites me to reflect on the significance of distance and the proximity of our hearts to You, Lord.
Lord, I thank You for the geographical and spiritual lessons found in this verse. Bethany’s nearness to Jerusalem serves as a poignant reminder of how close we can be to the sacred, to the place of divine miracles, and yet still be separated by the barriers of our own making. Just as Bethany was a mere fifteen furlongs from Jerusalem, I recognize that in my own life, I can often find myself physically near to the things of You, yet emotionally and spiritually distant. Forgive me, Lord, for those times when I have not fully engaged my heart in Your presence, when I have held back in worship, or when I have let doubts linger in my spirit.
God, help me to bridge the gap between mere physical proximity to You and heartfelt connection. Let not my distance be a reflection of my heart’s state. As I think of Bethany, a place known for your friend Lazarus and the hospitality of Mary and Martha, I am reminded that it is not just about being in the right place but about having the right posture before You. Teach me, Lord, to be like Mary, who chose to sit at Your feet and listen, rather than being distracted by the many things around her. Help me to prioritize my relationship with You over the busyness of life and the distractions that seek to pull me away from Your side.
As I contemplate the journey from Bethany to Jerusalem, I am also struck by the idea of a journey—a movement toward You, Lord, a transition from doubt to belief, from fear to faith. There may be many things that society and my own experiences signal to keep me distant from you: heartbreaks, disappointments, or feelings of inadequacy. However, I pray that, just as the sisters sent word to You about Lazarus, I too would seek You in my times of need and despair. Help me to understand that even when I feel far away, an honest cry of my heart can draw me back into Your embrace.
In this passage, I see the beauty of Your responsiveness even from a distance. That though Bethany was not entrenched in the heart of Jerusalem, Your grace and compassion extended to that town. Oh how reassuring it is to know that distance does not diminish Your ability to hear my prayers! Lord, I am comforted in knowing that whether I feel close or far, You are always near, ever ready to intervene when I call upon You. May your spirit humble me, guide me, and awaken me to the truth that whenever I draw near to You, You will draw near to me.
Now, Father, I also pray for relationships in my life that mirror this geographical distance. There may be those I can reach out to—friends, family, even strangers—who may feel distant from Your love and grace. Help me to extend Your love and compassion to them, creating pathways for connection. Give me wisdom on how to bridge the gaps in relationships that reflect Your ways. Just as You were present in Bethany, may I also be present to support and uplift others in their times of need.
Lord, as I journey through life, may I never lose sight of the call to draw nearer to You, continually seeking to understand Your Word, loving in prayer, and living out my faith in action. Thank you for the drawing power of Your presence, for the lessons carried in these few words of scripture. May I always strive to move closer to You, no matter the distance that threatens to separate my heart from Yours.
In Jesus’ name, I pray,
Amen.
