A Prayer for Dying to Self and Bearing Much Fruit

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit." - John 12:24

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit." - John 12:{verse.verse_number}

Most holy and gracious Father, I come before Thee in reverence, with a quiet heart and an open spirit, desiring to hear and obey Thy voice. I thank Thee for the words of Thy Son, Jesus Christ, and I receive them as truth for my life. Thou hast spoken plainly in the Scripture, and I confess that I need Thy light to understand it, Thy grace to accept it, and Thy power to live it.

Lord Jesus, I bow before Thee and I remember Thy words: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” I acknowledge that these words reveal the way of the kingdom, the path of true life, and the mystery of fruitful living. I confess, O God, that I often desire fruit without dying, increase without surrender, and blessing without yielding. Yet Thy Word teaches me that the life that clings to itself remains alone, but the life that is laid down in obedience becomes multiplied and fruitful.

Father, I ask Thee to search me and show me where I “abideth alone.” Reveal the hidden places where pride has kept me from being planted, where fear has kept me from trusting Thee, where bitterness has kept me from growing, and where comfort has kept me from obedience. I confess that I have sometimes resisted the very process that produces the harvest. Forgive me for striving to preserve my own way, my own reputation, my own control, and my own plans. Forgive me for the times I have chosen safety over sacrifice, and self-protection over love.

Lord, by Thy Spirit, teach me what it means to “fall into the ground and die.” Make me willing to be unseen, to be humbled, to be buried beneath the opinions of men, and to let go of what I cannot keep. Give me courage to release what Thou hast not ordained, and strength to surrender even good things when Thou dost call me deeper. Let my ambitions be laid at Thy feet. Let my wounds be placed into Thy hands. Let my desires be purified, and my motives made clean. If I must be planted in seasons of waiting, silence, and hiddenness, then grant me patience; and if I must endure the pressure of being covered, pressed, and forgotten by others, then keep my heart from despair.

Father, I thank Thee that this holy principle was first fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He did not remain alone, but gave Himself, and through His death He hath brought forth life. I praise Thee for the cross, where the Seed fell into the ground, that many might be redeemed. Let the mind that was in Christ be in me—willing to obey Thee fully, willing to love without measure, willing to serve without applause, willing to endure for the joy set before me.

Lord, I ask Thee to make my life fruitful—not for my glory, but for Thine. Let the fruit be the fruit of holiness, the fruit of righteousness, the fruit of love, the fruit of peace, and the fruit of faithful service. Let there be fruit in my home: patience, gentleness, truth, forgiveness, and the fear of the Lord. Let there be fruit in my relationships: humility, reconciliation, and compassion. Let there be fruit in my work: integrity, diligence, excellence, and kindness. Let there be fruit in my witness: boldness without harshness, clarity without pride, and grace that points others to Christ.

When dying feels costly, remind me that to “abideth alone” is a heavier loss than any surrender Thou mightest ask. When I fear the ground—the place of burial, the place of surrender—remind me that Thou art the Lord of the harvest. Keep me from measuring my life by immediate results, and teach me to trust Thy timing. If I am in a season where I feel hidden, buried, or broken, let me believe that Thou art working in secret ways. Thou art able to bring beauty from ashes, and Thou art able to bring “much fruit” from what appears to be loss.

Father, make me a willing seed in Thy hand. Plant me where Thou wilt. Use me as Thou choosest. Prune me when it is necessary. Water me with Thy Word. Strengthen me with Thy Spirit. And when the time of harvest comes, let it be said that Christ was magnified, the needy were helped, the lost were sought, the church was strengthened, and Thy name was honored.

I close this prayer clinging to the promise spoken by my Savior: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” Make this truth alive in me, Lord, until my life becomes a testimony of surrender and a harvest of praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
