A Prayer of Servanthood and Humility
"Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if you do them." - John 13:1-17

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, my heart is filled with gratitude and awe for the profound example of love and humility that Jesus Christ displayed during the Last Supper, as recorded in John 13:1-17. Lord, I reflect upon the moments before this significant meal, where Jesus, Your Son, aware of His impending departure from this world, chose to express His unfailing love for His disciples in the most humble way.
"Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.” (John 13:1). Father, as I meditate on this passage, I am struck by the depth of Your Son's love. Even knowing the weight of what lay before Him, He chose to focus on serving others. I pray that I, too, would cultivate such a heart of love that transcends my circumstances.
Lord, help me to love like Jesus—unconditionally, without reservation, and to the very end. In a world that often values power and prestige, teach me to value humility and service. Let me be willing to give of myself, just as Jesus laid aside His garments to wash the feet of His disciples.
"And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God” (John 13:2-3). O Lord, the betrayal that was to unfold was palpable. Yet, amid the looming treachery, Jesus demonstrated that true greatness is found in serving others. Help me to see beyond the faults and failures of those around me. Just as Jesus continued to minister to Judas, let fear or resentment not hinder my ability to serve. May I always remember that every person is made in Your image and deserves love and grace.
Father, I reflect on the moment when Jesus approached Peter to wash his feet. Peter’s reaction was one of disbelief, asking, "Lord, dost thou wash my feet?" (John 13:6). How often do I stand in disbelief of how You choose to meet my needs or serve through me? Lord, I pray for faith to recognize the truth of Your works, even when they challenge my understanding. Remind me of Jesus’ response: "If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me" (John 13:8). This teaches me that to be a part of You, I must be willing to allow You to cleanse me and transform me through service. Lord, wash me. Renew my spirit.
"For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you" (John 13:15). Oh, Savior, what a profound example You have set! It pains me to think of the times I have missed opportunities to serve others, choosing instead to prioritize my comfort or desires. I pray for the strength and will to follow Your example—to wash the feet of those around me. Help me see the beauty in serving others, whether through simple acts of kindness, sharing my resources, or offering my time. Let my service reflect Your love and grace.
"If ye know these things, happy are ye if you do them" (John 13:17). Father, may I find joy in serving, for when I serve others, I am ultimately serving You. Create in me a servant’s heart, humble and selfless, that rejoices not in recognition but in the opportunity to spread Your love. May my life, like that of Jesus, be a testament to the power of love in action.
As I close this prayer, I ask for the Holy Spirit's guidance each day—help me to embody the spirit of servanthood that Jesus exemplified. And let my life be a reflection of Your love, as I strive to wash the feet of others.
In Jesus' name, I pray,
Amen.
