That Thy Joy Might Remain in Me, and That My Joy Might Be Full
“These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” — John 15:11
Father in heaven, I come before Thee with reverence and gratitude, acknowledging that Thou art good, faithful, and true. I bless Thy holy name, and I thank Thee for Thy Word that speaks life into my heart. Today I set my thoughts upon the words of Jesus Christ as written in the King James Version: “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” Lord, let this Word not be distant from me, but living and active within me. Let it settle into the deepest places of my soul, and let it shape my desires, my decisions, and my daily steps.
Lord Jesus, Thou hast spoken “these things” unto us. Thou hast not spoken to burden us, to confuse us, or to leave us wandering in emptiness. Thou hast spoken that Thy joy might remain in us. I confess that I have often sought joy in places where it cannot stay—joy that rises with circumstances and falls with disappointment, joy that depends upon praise, comfort, or success. Forgive me for the times I have chased after fleeting happiness and called it joy, only to find that it fades when trials come or when the heart grows weary. I repent of every attempt to fill my life with substitutes, and I ask Thee to cleanse me and renew my mind.
Holy Father, I ask that “thy joy might remain in” me. Not merely visit me for a moment, not merely touch me in passing, but remain—abide—stay. Let Thy joy be rooted in me deeper than fear, deeper than anxiety, deeper than sorrow, deeper than the pressures of this world. When my thoughts are restless, speak peace. When my heart is heavy, breathe hope. When my faith feels small, strengthen me by Thy Spirit. Teach me that Thy joy is not fragile, not shallow, not temporary; it is the joy of Christ Himself, steady and holy, flowing from communion with Thee.
Lord, I pray that Thy joy would remain in me in every season. In days of abundance, keep me humble and thankful, that I may rejoice in Thee rather than in gifts alone. In days of lack, keep me trusting and steadfast, that I may not measure Thy goodness by what I can see with my eyes. In days of labor, let Thy joy give me strength to endure with integrity. In days of waiting, let Thy joy steady my heart so I do not complain, grow bitter, or lose hope. In days of suffering, let Thy joy become a hidden well within me, reminding me that Thou art present, and that Thou art working even when I do not understand.
And Father, according to Thy Word, I ask also “that your joy might be full.” Lord, I do not ask for a partial portion, a shallow cup, or a joy that is easily drained. I ask for fullness—the fullness that comes from being near unto Thee, walking in Thy ways, and trusting Thy promises. Fill my joy by filling my heart with love for Thee, love for Thy Son, and love for others. Where resentment has taken space, uproot it, and replace it with forgiveness. Where envy has tried to steal contentment, purify my desires. Where cynicism has made my spirit cold, restore wonder and worship. Where sin has dulled my conscience, awaken holy fear and holy delight, that I may turn quickly from darkness and walk in the light.
Lord Jesus, let Thy joy remain in me when I am misunderstood, when I am opposed, and when I am tempted to defend myself in the flesh. Teach me to be quiet before Thee, to listen, and to obey. Let my joy be full when I serve without applause, when I give without recognition, and when I choose righteousness though it costs me. Make me faithful in the hidden places, consistent in private, sincere in repentance, and steadfast in prayer.
Father, let this fullness of joy overflow in my words and actions. Let it shape my home, my work, my friendships, and my church. Make me a bearer of Thy light, not with forced cheer, but with a deep and steady gladness that comes from knowing Thee. When others meet me, let them sense patience instead of panic, gratitude instead of grumbling, hope instead of despair. Use my life to point them to Christ, that they too might hear His words and receive His joy.
I thank Thee, Lord, that Thou hast not left me to create my own joy. Thou hast spoken, and Thy Word is sure: “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” Seal this promise in my heart. Keep me near to Thee. Teach me to abide, to trust, and to obey. And let Thy joy—pure, holy, and unshakable—remain in me all my days, until faith becomes sight.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
