A Prayer for Awakening and Understanding
"Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him." - John 20:2

O Heavenly Father,
As I approach Your presence today, I am reminded of the moment recorded in the Gospel of John, chapter 20, verse 2: "Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him." Lord, in this profound expression of sorrow and confusion, I see the very heart of humanity reflected. I bow down before You, seeking Your wisdom and presence amid the uncertainties of life.
Dear God, just as Mary Magdalene ran to share her anguish, may we also be moved to seek You when we are lost and desperate. I praise You for the example of Mary, whose deep love for Jesus compelled her to act swiftly. Lord, ignite within us that same fervency to pursue You, to seek out the truth in times of turmoil. Help us recognize that in our moments of pain and confusion, our first instinct should be to run towards You.
Father, I pray for our hearts to be made sensitive to Your voice and Your movements in our lives. Like Mary, we often encounter moments of despair when all we see before us is an empty tomb, a situation where it seems that hope has been snatched away. Teach us, Lord, how to bring our uncertainties and fears to the feet of the faithful. Help us articulate our bewilderment just as Mary did; may we not hide our emotions, but rather allow ourselves to be vulnerable before You.
As I reflect on this verse, I realize how often we misinterpret loss as finality, how we equate absence with defeat. Yet, You remind us through the resurrection that empty spaces can herald great new beginnings. Lord, I ask for Your revelation in my life. Help me to discern the moments when You seem absent so that I may understand the greater plan You have for me. May I hold tightly to the promises of Your word—that even when we do not see You, You are at work behind the scenes.
Dear Jesus, just as Peter and the disciple whom You loved ran towards the tomb at Mary’s word, I pray for a spirit of urgency to fill Your Church today. May we be quick to respond to the calling of our brothers and sisters in Christ, understanding that in moments of desperation, we can be vessels of Your grace and hope. Fill our hearts with compassion and a desire to uplift those around us who are grappling with doubt and fear.
Lord, instill within us the faith that propels us forward even in uncertainty. Teach us to be like the disciples who, upon receiving Mary’s news, hurried to seek the truth, to confront what seemed impossible and to embrace the reality of Your victory over death. Grant us a similar zeal to seek out evidence of Your presence in our lives, to investigate the truths of Your love that conquer despair.
As I pray now, I ask that You fill my mind with peace and my spirit with hope. Help me, Lord, to recognize that You do not leave us without guidance or comfort. In those moments of confusion, remind us of the resurrection promise, that what we perceive to be taken away may indeed be transformed into new life. May our hearts always be turned towards seeking and understanding Your ways.
In the name of Jesus, I pray for clarity where there is fog, for resolution in the ambiguity of our circumstances, allowing us to proclaim with assurance that indeed, You are alive. Grant us the faith to always believe, to seek, and to rejoice in Your undying love, for it is in You that we find our true rest and understanding.
Amen.
