In Faithful Following: A Prayer Inspired by John 21:20
"Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?" - John 21:20

Dear Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I am reminded of the profound moment captured in the Gospel of John, specifically John 21:20. It reads, "Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?" Lord, this verse opens a window into the depth of our relationship with You and calls us into a deeper understanding of our following of Christ.
Lord, I thank You for the gift of Your Word, which not only recounts events but also teaches us vital truths about our walk with You. As Peter turned and saw the disciple whom You loved – leaner on Your breast at supper – I am reminded of the intimacy of being close to You. Help me seek that closeness with You, to lean my head upon Your chest, to hear the heartbeat of Your grace, and to receive the comfort that comes from being in Your presence.
I recognize that before we can follow You fully, there is a call to intimacy. So, Lord, I pray that You stir my heart to seek You with all my being. Teach me to lean in closer to You in prayer, in worship, and in the quietness of my soul. Let my desires be cultivated through this intimate relationship, that I may always long to draw nearer to You, aspiring to hear Your whispers above the noise of the world.
As I reflect on Peter’s inquiry, Lord, it reminds me that curiosity exists alongside faith. Help me understand that it is not wrong to question, to seek, or even to struggle with my understanding of Your ways. Like Peter, I may come with questions about betrayal, doubt, and uncertainties concerning my faith and the faith of others. Teach me to bring these questions to You.
Father, help me to be at peace with the paths You choose for others. Just as You had different roles and destinies for Peter and the beloved disciple, I know that You have a unique purpose for my life. Help me to avoid comparison and instead embrace the singular journey You have paved for me. When envy or confusion arises as I see others following in ways that seem fruitful, remind me of Your plan for my life, and grant me the serenity to trust in Your guidance.
O Lord, in a world full of distractions, help me to recognize the beauty of steady following. Let my eyes be set on You and Your Son, Jesus Christ, so that I will not be swayed by the narratives and concerns of this world. Grant me the strength to remain steadfast, humble, and focused on following You, even as the winds of life seek to deter me. Each time I stumble or stray from Your path, let the whispers of Your love call me back gently, reminding me that I am always welcomed back into fellowship with You.
I also pray for those who are struggling in their faith. May they find comfort in the fellowship and love of believers, as Peter found in the beloved disciple. Let me be a warm presence in their lives, echoing the same love and compassion that Jesus has shown to me. Help me to steer them towards You, especially when they confront betrayal, loss, or heartache.
Finally, Lord, instill in me a deep sense of gratitude for those who support my faith journey, as the beloved disciple supported Peter. May I cherish and uplift my community of faith, recognizing the precious role they play in holding my hand as we walk together toward You.
I conclude this prayer with a heart full of thanks, knowing that You hear me and walk with me. Keep my eyes fixed on You, Lord, now and always. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
