A Prayer for Strength Against Temptation and Acknowledgment of Sin
"When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it." - Joshua 7:21

Heavenly Father,
We come before You today in humility and reverence, acknowledging Your greatness, love, and justice. You are the Creator of Heaven and Earth, the One who knows our innermost thoughts and desires. As we meditate on Your Word, specifically on Joshua 7:21, we are reminded of the frailty of our human nature. Your servant Joshua conveyed the dire consequences of coveting and succumbing to temptation when he recounted the action of Achan: “When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.” (KJV)
Lord, like Achan, we too have moments when we are enticed by the allure of material possessions and the desires of this world. In a society that constantly pushes us to seek wealth, status, and possessions, it becomes easy to lose sight of what truly matters. Strengthen us, O God, to resist the shiny distractions that draw our attention away from You. Help us to recognize that true richness comes not from earthly treasures but from our relationship with You. Remind us that all that glitters is not gold and that the things we covet may, in fact, lead us down a path of destruction.
We pray that You open our eyes, Lord, to see clearly the consequences of our actions. Like Achan, our sin can have ramifications beyond our understanding, affecting our families, communities, and nations. We ask for Your forgiveness for the times we have been greedy, envious, or covetous. Cleanse our hearts, Lord, and create in us a spirit of generosity. Help us to cherish what we have and to focus on sharing our blessings rather than hoarding them.
Lord, You know our struggles with temptation and our failures to overcome them. We ask that you grant us the strength to face temptations head-on and the wisdom to differentiate between our needs and our wants. Teach us to manage our desires in a manner that honors You. May we draw strength from Your Word, reminding ourselves of Scripture when we are tempted: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33, KJV) May we pursue holiness, righteousness, and the beauty of Your presence over the fleeting pleasures this world has to offer.
Father, we also pray for those around us who may struggle with similar covetousness. May we not only be vigilant for our own hearts but also be a source of encouragement for others. Help us to create an environment where we can hold one another accountable, reminding each other of the importance of integrity and purity. Let us build each other up in faith, so we can collectively stand firm against the pressures of materialism that seek to ensnare us.
And when we stumble, Lord, let us be quick to confess and repent. Like Achan, we admit our mistakes and bring them before Your throne of grace—knowing that Your love restores, heals, and forgives. We draw strength from Your mercy, knowing that it is sufficient in our weakness. Help us to learn from our experiences, so we may not repeat the same errors in judgment.
In closing, Lord, we ask for Your guidance in our daily lives. Lead us away from temptation and deliver us from the evil one. Fill us with Your Spirit and let Your will be done in our hearts. We aim to live with integrity, honesty, and a heart that seeks after Your kingdom above all else. Thank You for hearing our prayer and for the promise of Your presence in our lives.
In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
