A Prayer for Refuge and Courage in Times of Fear
"And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother." - Judges 9:21

O Lord God Almighty,
In the stillness of this moment, we come before You with reverence and humility, acknowledging Your sovereignty over our lives. We turn our hearts to the Scriptures, and particularly to the poignant story of Jotham, who, as it is written in Judges 9:21, "And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother."
Father, we reflect on Jotham's plight, the deep sense of fear that prompted him to flee and seek refuge in Beer. We understand that fear can be a consuming force, and it is often driven by circumstances beyond our control. Today, we seek to understand the lessons embedded in this narrative and how it applies to our own lives.
In a world where uncertainty looms large, where adversities threaten our peace, we confess that we, too, have known fear—a fear that has led us to seek safety in various forms, sometimes away from Your presence. We often allow the whispers of doubt and anxiety to overshadow our faith in You, our Rock and Fortress.
Heavenly Father, we pray for those who are feeling trapped in their fears, just as Jotham was. Help us to recognize when we are running from the very things that You have called us to confront. Teach us to distinguish between wise caution and the paralyzing grip of fear. Help us to acknowledge our feelings, yet not be consumed by them. May we remember that Your perfect love casts out fear, as it is written in 1 John 4:18, and that we may seek comfort in Your promises.
Lord, instill in us the courage of Jotham, who, though he fled, ultimately stood for truth and righteousness. I pray for a bold spirit within us, one that seeks to confront challenges head-on with the weapon of prayer and the shield of faith. May we learn to channel our anxieties into action, finding ways to honor You even in the midst of turmoil.
As Jotham sought refuge in Beer, we ask that You guide each of us to our own place of safety and comfort in You. May we dwell in Your presence, where our fears transform into faith and our doubts are met with Your assurance. Surround us with godly companions who will encourage us, just as Jotham had his own support, even amidst peril.
Creator of the heavens and the earth, remind us that in our moments of retreat, we can regroup, reflect, and recharge through prayer and meditation on Your Word. We ask for the discipline to dwell deeply in the Scriptures, to emerge equipped and ready to fulfill the destiny You have ordained for us. Let our time in refuge become a time of renewal.
We pray specifically for those who feel haunted by betrayal or strife within their families or communities, just as Jotham experienced conflict with his brother Abimelech. Heal broken relationships and restore the bonds of love where fear and animosity have taken root. We ask for wisdom and grace in our interactions with those who may hurt us, that we may reflect Christ’s love even in trying circumstances.
Finally, Lord, as we come to the close of this prayer, we lay down our fears at Your feet. We commit our struggles to You, trusting that You will provide the strength we need to face each day. May we carry the lessons of Jotham in our hearts, knowing that fleeing is sometimes necessary for our preservation, but that the ultimate goal is to return strengthened and ready to stand in faith.
In Jesus’ most powerful name, we pray. Amen.
