A Prayer of Repentance and Dependence

"We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread." - Lamentations 5:6

"We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread." - Lamentations 5:{verse.verse_number}

O Lord God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, we come before You with hearts that long for Your presence, yearning for a deep, abiding connection with Your Spirit. We are reminded of the words in Lamentations 5:6, "We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread." In this poignant verse, we see a reflection of our own hearts, our own tendencies to seek satisfaction in the things of this world, rather than in You.

Gracious Father, we acknowledge that, like the children of Israel, we too have often turned to the ways of the world—seeking nourishment from sources that do not truly satisfy. Forgive us, O Lord, for placing our trust in the systems, the powers, and the fleshly desires that promise abundance yet leave our souls yearning for more. We confess that, in our pursuit of comfort and provision, we have sometimes aligned ourselves with those who do not acknowledge You, relinquishing our dependence on Your faithful provision in exchange for a temporary satiation.

Lord, we plead for Your mercy as we reflect on our lives. These past days have often found us reaching out to the worldly Egyptians and Assyrians, seeking bread that perishes, rather than relying on You, the Bread of Life. Help us to see the futility in seeking fulfillment from places devoid of Your Spirit.

Lord, we fall short of Your glory, but we are grateful that Your grace covers all transgressions. We thank You for Your everlasting love and the continuous invitation to return to You, our true sustainer and provider. We desire to live in a way that brings honor to Your name, casting aside our dependence on earthly things. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Teach us to find our satisfaction in You alone.

As we meditate on the choices we have made, help us to understand the implications of turning to those who do not serve You. Grant us insight to recognize when we are compromising our integrity and faith by seeking relationships, employment, or security outside of Your will. Help us to discern how our reliance on the world affects our spiritual walk and our communion with You.

Holy Spirit, stir within us a desire to seek the bread of heaven. As we read Your Word, guide us to understand that every good and perfect gift comes from above, and that true sustenance comes from a relationship with You. Teach us to pray, to lean into the promise of Psalm 37:25, knowing that the righteous shall never go hungry, as long as we commit our ways to You, O Lord.

Heavenly Father, help us to remember that while it may seem comforting to partner with the worldly nations, in doing so, we often forfeit our peace and security found only in You. We ask that You would strengthen our hearts to remain steadfast in faith, trusting in Your perfect provision. Remove from us any anxiety about our needs, and instill deep in our souls the knowledge that You, our Shepherd, will always lead us to green pastures and still waters.

In our communities, let us be a beacon of hope to those lost in their pursuit of worldly satisfactions. Let us lead by example, showing that true contentment comes from you. Help us to reach out not only for our own fill but to offer the Living Water to others so that they too may not seek to give their hands to the Egyptians and Assyrians, but instead to reach towards You, Lord.

As we close this prayer, we thank You for hearing our supplications. We place our trust in You, for You are our provider, sustainer, and the author of our lives. In Jesus' mighty name, we pray, Amen.
