A Prayer for Choosing the Good Part
"But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." - Luke 10:42

Heavenly Father,
As I come before You today, I thank You for the gift of Your Word, which serves as a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105). In this sacred moment, I reflect on the profound truth spoken by our Lord Jesus in Luke 10:42: "But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."
Lord, I recognize that distractions abound in my life, pulling me in various directions, demanding my attention, and often leading me away from the place of peace and communion with You. In a world filled with noise, let me, like Mary, choose the better part—the part that allows me to sit at Your feet, to learn, to grow, and to be transformed by Your presence. Compel my heart to prioritize the things that matter eternally over the trivial concerns of daily life.
Help me to understand deeply what it means that "one thing is needful." I yearn for discernment in discerning the vital issues of my life. Jesus, You exemplified perfect focus; You came to seek and to save that which was lost. Teach me to focus my energy and my thoughts on the purpose for which You have called me. Remove the clutter from my spirit and silence the clamor of my thoughts as I seek Your face in tranquility.
Father, I ask for the grace to lay aside the burdens that beset me, the to-do lists that seem endless, the conversations that do not build up, and the activities that pull me away from enriching my relationship with You. Fill my heart with a holy desire for Your presence, that I may echo Mary’s longing for Your Word and wisdom as the singular priority of my life.
As I pursue this relationship with You, I place before You the distractions that tempt me to stray. Forgive me, Lord, for when I have chosen the temporary over the eternal, allowing busyness to take precedence over my need for intimacy with You. I confess the times I have missed moments of clarity, strength, and joy because I was preoccupied with lesser things.
Lord, as I embrace the good part that Mary chose, I pray for a heart that delights in Your Word. Help me to meditate on Scripture daily, allowing its truths to penetrate the deepest corners of my soul. May Your Holy Spirit guide me into all truth, inspiring my heart with revelation as I read and ponder Your sacred writings. Instill in me a thirst for righteousness and an unwavering commitment to prayer. Let my prayers not merely be a ritual but a genuine communication with my Father.
May I also encourage others to seek that good part. Help me to lead by example, reflecting the peace and joy that comes from resting in You. Let my life be a witness that testifies of the fulfillment found in choosing Your way, instead of being entangled in the affairs of this world. Empower me to share the importance of prioritizing time with You with those I love, shining a light in their pathways to You.
In moments of worry and temptation to rush back into the busyness of life, remind me of Mary’s choice. Let her faithfulness inspire a similar resolve in my heart to cultivate my relationship with You above all. I am reminding myself, Lord, that the good part chosen by Mary shall not be taken away from her.
Thank You for the promise that time spent with You is never wasted. May I find great joy and fulfillment in my relationship with You, holding tightly to that good part which continues to enhance every aspect of my life.
I pray all of this in the powerful and transformative name of Jesus Christ.
Amen.
